Battery

Hi All,

I had to get a jump start from the RAA yesterday because I left my lights on . The battery is okay for now but will probably need to be replaced before to long, which is fine.

However, the RAA guy quotes about $180 for a new one, which seems a bit steep to me. Are there any more cost effective options? Where could I go to pick one up? (It's a MK1 golf BTW.)

I got a champion whatsy-mah-doover with 560CCA for like $190 from repco. Apparently Lead prices have gone up around the world, hence the increase in battery prices..

Be glad you don't own a MKIV or a passat, they start at $225

Jesus...560CCA for a MK1 Golf...That would crank over a Mack!!! I thought you would be looking in the region of 300CCA for a little Golf. I picked up a 310CCA Champion for $85 the other week, and that was from a corner BP servo.
I really suggest shopping around. $190 is way too much for a small battery for a golf, or any other no Diesel 4WD.

yea, I was having issues with starting and stuff.

I had a 400-440ish CCA in there before, like an RACV one, but I figured what the hell. I was only like 20 buck odd more for the "highperformance" 560CCA.

I'm sure you can get cheaper ones, probably even closer to $150 for one with less CCA. But it's up to you...

i have to get a new one soon because it went flat while i havent been driving it (no licence), and now lookin at those prices im really not looking forward to it lol

Also just to mention, the diesel mk1's do need a bigger battery. Have you seen the size of there starter motor!

Any engine with approx 24:1 compression is going to need something big.

Lead prices have gone through the roof as mentioned. Some are paying sometimes upto $10 a battery!

Another mention is, you really need a battery with recessed terminal's, so they are nowhere near maing contact with the bonnet.

the diesel battery is usually between 500 and 600CCA.

i cant see a problem with paying for a big battery - the benefits are good ones. i've had the same 550CCA battery in my old mk1 diesel, now its in my white LS - for 5 years. its been run completely flat atleast 10 times, and still works fine.

can beat that fast crank and strong spark for cold mornings.

if you shop around you oughta be able to get something above 500CCA for around the $150 mark.

Ah so that's why it needs recessed terminals. The RAA guy explained that it was a special battery because of the recessed terminals, but didn't understand why it was significant.

I've shopped around a bit and the price I was quoted seems comparable, though I'm not sure of the exact specs of the replacement.

The current one in my car is a Bosch 480CCA (wouldn't have known what that meant a week ago!) and an exact replacement is about $200. You can get standard batteries which suit the MK1 with lower CCA for less money, but I'm inclined to go for a higher rated one for extra reserve and piece of mind. Plus the RAA fee includes fitting and disposal of the old battery.

thats what I did. Havn't regretted being able to start my car without a choke on all those cold mornings!

has anyone looked at thoes dry cell battries? these usally come with recessed terminals but are a smaller size and so its not as nessacarry to have them (im pretty sure they have screw in normal terminals as well)

and the the weight differance between a 580cca and a dry cell equilvant would be huge.

As does the cost from my memory.

But can be worth it depending on the space requirement's.
