Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Saving the Swallowtail

Hi all, well I'm the proud new owner of 3 Mk1 golfs all 2 doors.
First and the reason for this thread is a '76 Martini Olive LE swallowtail that was hit in the rear while parked, luckly there was a Subaru between the at fault car and the Golf to soften the blow.

Here's a pick from the accident

She goes in to get straightened out on Saturday, and hopefully will be on the road again soon.
The previous owner really loved her, and she's one of the nicest I've seen.
It's got a sweet little 1.8 with a webber and 5speed, Eibach springs and the list goes on.

Also in the sale were a '79 2 door project with a 1.8 8V 5 speed rear disc conversion new exhaust etc that I have some serious plans for, and a personal import '80 GTI that has front damage but is repairable and complete, except for the bits that have been used on the swallowtail.

I'll post more pics when I have them.
    Cheers, Scott.

From your other posts you sound like another MK1 tragic so it's good to see the cars going to someone who will look after them.

Once the MK1 bug bites it never lets go.

Cheers and congratulations on your new fleet.

Thanks Paul, I'm just having a coffee before I head off to get her.
The gti and a tonne of parts is tomorrow's mission.
I'll take a heap of pics and post them up tonight.

Damn straight about the mk1 bug! ..... there's no cure for it either!......... My wife has tried!

On another note, I have a V6 passat sedan with a split torque converter in the fleet, so if you need any bits let me know!
        Cheers, Scott.

Yeah It's actually a disease I'm pretty sure it comes under the mental health act! they call it Volkswagenusgolfitis Type 1............ There is no cure and it's not readily understood by non-sufferers!

            Soooo....THE PLAN!.....The overall plan is:
            1. to get the '76 back on the road (with some mods-I'll go into those later) in time for the nats this year.

            2. to repair the GTI and get it back to original (that will involve taking all the GTI parts from the "76, so that gonna need some cool replacements) It will go up for sale when it's done because while I appreciate how special it is, it's just not my thing. Someone else will love her much more than me! I'd like to have it done this year, we'll see how that goes!
So if your after a Mk1 GTI watch this space!

            3. The '79 is a nice base for a project but not so nice that I'd feel bad heavily modifying it, so it's going to get some fairly insane mods, partly funded by the sale of the GTI (but not entirely so don't tell my wife!)
It will involve 4motion, an engine swap and a turbocharger............... Yes I'm insane, but it's a long term project, and i can't think of any other car I'd want to do it to!

So I'm having technology dramas, I can't gett the pictures I've taken to go from my phone to the computer, it seems they just don't like one another, so I'll try sending them to the Ipad by bluetooth in the meantime I'll take the old digital camera with me today.

The panel beater wanted me to strip the back end down and fit the new tail gate before I leave it with him, so of course that's all done!
Disappointingly the later model rear panel that came with the car is way too different to use for small taillights so I'm after a back panel if anyone knows of one in Sydney that is halfway usable I also need taillights, most importantly the left, and a tailgate, because I've pinched the one off the other car for the time being.

So if anyone has parts please let me know!

ATM it looks like going into the shop in 3 weeks, which is frustrating, but the straightening needs to be done with the right gear, and I just don't have it. I'll just have to be patient

I'll work on getting photos up tonight!

              Scott.

                          Awesome news!!!

I spoke to my Mate today about the time frame for getting the car repaired, and he said bring it in next Saturday morning and we'll do it together then and there.
So by Saturday afternoon she should be ready for a new beaver panel, there's the hard part!!!! finding or making a swallowtail beaver panel!
Oh well if it was easy every one would be doing it!

                            Give Nick at Volksparts a call - 0412 345 126.

He charges like a wounded bull so be prepared to haggle but he has a few spares.
