That's pretty cool someone else is doing it, anyone know if he's keeping the Electronic fuel pump setup? That would be my plan as I like technology and know it makes other things easier.
I'm going to correct you early on here. Its TWO DOOR! . 3 door was started in the 90s as a marketing sling by jap car companies to make the car seem bigger and better.

My GF has a 80's Saab 900 and they came in, 2 door "sedan", 3 door hatch, 4 door sedan and 5 door hatch, so that's why I call it a 3 door, even though there isn't a 2 door with a boot Golf, only Jetta's :p

But if that's the case then I'll stick around here and if there's days where you guys would say, do major work on someones car as a group, I'd be up for that sort of thing to get the hang of this FWD stuff again.
dude you have NO idea how many wrecked mk5's there are kicking around. hit the auctions you'll pick one up for about 3k; sell off the parts and you'll recoup a lot of your initial cost.

but be warned the new tdi motors are so heavy and so is the dsg. the dsg is about 40kg's heavier than the already overweight 6spd manual.

You cant beat the original hot hatch
i got hooked around 3 years ago i was into jap crap had couple Swift Gtis spent plenty of cash on them then went from the hatch back scene and into an evo lancer, and in between all that a good mate basically made! me (long story one day soon you'll understand why) get into a mk1 for a daily cause i didn't like driving the evo and that was it! as you can see by my signature im hooked evo has gone and the mk1 is in the garage weekend car only and a VR6 as a daily not a bad combo.

They are awesome cars, I've been into VW's for years as mentioned, but not got into it phsyically because of being scared and then getting Volvo's as they are cheaper to buy and such. I have very fond memories of me watching my father work on his 81 Passat GLD when I was young and it's come from that, and until I bought my Volvo we had VW's in the hosuehold only for at least 10 years.

But when the time comes I will be watching the auctions and I'll be getting a manual 6 speed as it would also be a daily as my Volvo will have a 3.0litre 24V motor in it and lots of other fun stuff

conversely to this thread - i always thought a volvo 240 with the 6cyl VW/volvo diesel, whopping great turbo's (yes, 2 of please) would be huge fun!

with a borexstroke combo happy to go past 5000rpm, plenty of boost and 3" straigh pipes, i reckon you'd embarrass many a v8 powered local...

but, i love the vw's too much, and i dont have room or maney for another car, hehe.

Too bad we never got them in Aus, there was one 760 which came with the turbo intercooled motor on ebay last year, but it was also rusted out and was in Queensland, would've loved that.
