  • Tempted by Mk1's.

Before I bought my 264GLE, I lusted majorly after a Mk1 Golf. I'm getting to a stage where I can buy a second car, and possibly be able to store it somewhere too. And of course I want to do what I planned years ago before I got my licence, a Mk1 3 door, with a 1.9 or 2.0 TDi on coil-overs with some interior work, a half cage and possibly a Polo Dash or something like that.

However, looking at the prices of them, it's not like with Volvo's where they are a dime a dozen, and I don't know the wreckers for them or the club's either, so I was wondering is the VW Club in Vic supportive of modifying Mk1's, are there members who own workshops and will help out a fellow Dubber if they need parts a bit cheaper then what they sell to the public etc?

Because I'm seriously tempted to save as much as I can for a 3 door, with or without motor, and a mostly straight body with minor rust, and learn to do panel work on it if needed, as well as modifying it's looks a bit.

Don't hesitate to ask about anything matey.

James is right though, the VWCV has really not much to do with the waterpumper's & even more so with the early ones.

This has just ended on flea bay too. Could still make an offer though

I've been tempted by a 2.0TDI DSG conversion, but the coin & ongoing other project's don't allow it.

Damn, that would be perfect, but I'd be just buying the car then recovering that cost of a while, and I'd prefer to have a manual as well, but I think if a came across a wrecked GT TDi with a manual, I would do anything to get it as that's got a higher comp motor and more hp and torque.

But if that's the case then I'll stick around here and if there's days where you guys would say, do major work on someones car as a group, I'd be up for that sort of thing to get the hang of this FWD stuff again.

Been on here a while, but yeah, not really ventured into here as Dad's got a Mk3, so no need :p

And yeah, I'd be glad to come over and help, I'm a 2nd year diesel mechanic so I have some mechanical skills, and have some skills with the RWD Volvo's and 80's Saab 900's, but not much else and I would love them.

              I'm Alex btw.

My old 264 had K-jet, I avioded it as much as possible, but still had to work on it a bit, so yeah, yeah, familiar would be the right word.

Hey Alex, good to see another keen person wanting to keep the mk1 dream alive.

And by they way, there's a few of us up HERE with mk1's too ya know! .

Like all the other guys said, any questions at all just ask, and as Gene Berg said "No question is stupid if it has to be asked".

Keep an eye out mate, they're like buses. Don't take the first one you find.

Oh, and i'm Chris by the way. But call me Preeny.

Funny story there too, i work on buses, but yeah I'll just look until the money is high enough for me to go and buy one that will suit me, but both my cars were like diamonds in the rough that too way too much work to get RW'd, the current one isn't yet still, and i've had it almost 10 months now. But with this it would be a long term project, just gotta find space as my parents would kill me for buying another bloody car.

Mk 1's are great. small easy to work on, and relatively simple too.

I'm a bit mechanically minded, (actually a fair bit but that's something else) but most of what I've learnt about mk 1's is from this site and a haynes manual! That'll pretty much get you by!

Mk 1 diesels are starting to get a bit rare, well atleast, they're harder to find than petrol models I find. But if you are going to mod a mk1 crazily like you want, the base model won't really matter.

Mike from NSW is building up a mk 1 TDI, and while he hasn't let too much out of the bag yet, it should be a bit of a weapon.

Parts are easy enough to come buy, alot of bits can be found locally, and perishables and so on and so forth are readily availiable from the US, and at a properly decent price.

they're great fun basically. I love mine to death, so much so that I want another. but then again, don't we all??

Yeah, Dad's Mk3 is fun to throw around and I know it's hardly the best model to be throwing around, so i know a Mk1 would be great fun, getting a diesel isn't important to me as I want a 3 door anyway.

That's pretty cool someone else is doing it, anyone know if he's keeping the Electronic fuel pump setup? That would be my plan as I like technology and know it makes other things easier.
