  • 1.8 litre engine

Just another question I have a 1800 and a1600 engine
The 1600 has a new head G grind cam little bit of work done to it and a old bottom end
Just wonder is it possible to put the 1600 head on a 1800 block
What will happen if I do it
I still have to rebuild the 1800 totally
Is that a good thing or just rebuild the 1800 head
Don't know to much about engines
I am trying to keep it old school
    No injection
    Will be using webber
    Sorry if a dumb question
    Thanks scoot

The 1.6 head on the 1.8 will work, it will be more torquey but still be revvy! It's a good idea in my books, along with some webers of course haha!
    - Orange Golf mk1 LS, 1.8 5speed, 32/36 - sold
    - Golf mk1 Swallowtail rebuild, completely stripped
    - Brown U.S import 81 cabby

It's can be done. But why would you put a small valve head on the 1.8? Unless it's got lots of port and valve work done. If not should look into a mk3 or seat 1.8 complete motor, Saves you a heap of hassle.

Why would you bother with a 1.6 when a complete 2.0 is less than $400.

        And it wouldn't need rebuilding.

So you guys have convinced me to go to a 2.0l
What model mk3 does it come out of
          Can I use the gearbox
Does the bigger brake fit into a mk1
Can I still run webber or do I have to go efi
And what price should I pay
          Big thanks scoot

Go down and see Mat at Camden GTI. Not only will he tell you what you need but he'll also have all the parts (at a good price) and give you a million tips to make the swap easy. Or you could look for a cheap or wrecked 2.0 MK3 and use all the bits you need (motor, 5 speed gearbox, EFI, wiring, brake booster etc). You can't use the MK3 suspension because it's different to the MK1. Either way, still go and see Mat. He's done this swap a million times before and he knows what he's talking about without bullsh*ting you.

You can run a Webber but EFI will be slightly more powerful and use less petrol. The EFI will be harder to install.

The best combo for a 2.0 is the 2.0 bottom end with a MK2 GTI head. That's what I've got in my MK2 and it easily hits 180 kph and revs to 6000. This motor will soon be going into my MK1 which is 100 kg lighter.

            Should be fun.

The head Paul ^^^is talking about does not need to be Mk2 GTI, any 1.8 K jet head is the same other than being either K jet, Carb or Digifant ( efi ) injected. All injected heads can have blanking plugs inserted into the injection ports so as to make it suitable for a carby set up.
Gti Mk2 will have a different cam ( swappable between heads ), just dont swap a hydraulic follower cam into a non hydro head... ( 5 cam bearings = shim adjustment, 4 cam bearings = hydraulic )

1.6 head onto a 1.8 engine block you would need to plug the smaller oil drain hole in the block as the 1.6 head only has 1 at the front, not 2

The 2 litre swap with the 1.8 head is a great and cheap conversion as long as the base engine and head are not needing a rebuild, last engines we got for around $50 each....
              Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

              Cheers,
