  • AK engine into mk1

    has anyone done a 2.0 mk4 engine into a mk1?

I imagine it would be the same as a 1.8t in terms of mounts and that, but others would know better.

My question is why? Mk3 2.0 engines are everywhere and mk1 mounts bolt straight up. You can even fit mk4 heads with a little modification. Does the AK have an aluminum block?

^ At a guess I would think Browneye might be talking about a 2lt cross-flow head from the Mk4 (rather than the counter-flow ones that come as standard on engines like the 2E).

Sorry for the confusion. 8v mk4 heads can be put on external water pump blocks but they require welding and machining so that the oil returns line up with the block. Same goes for 20v heads and I assume 16v heads. They both lower the compression to around 8:1 so would need boost or custom pistons.

Would be easier to put the whole mk4 lump in using off the shelf custom mounts (assuming they're the same as 1.8t blocks). Probably worth a shot. Haven't seen it done personally and would give a mk1 a nice kick up the ass. Not sure how much more than a mk3 2.0 would though.

1.8 Turbo is the best and easiest upgrade in the long run.
              Nothing is cheap really.
As yours is already fi ABF out of a Cupra would be 2nd choice.
8 v upgrades are not cheap really and only produce small improvement.
