  • help needed: Mk1 Headlight options

Ok, so I do drive at night often enough to warrant better headlights than what I'm currently equipped with.

Right now I'm driving with the highbeams on and still have low visibility..

So what are my options here.. HID xenon/halogen blah blah blah. Not out to get "dope as f@#$ beams bro!", I just want good visibility and low power consumption (already having dramas at night with overconsumption of electricals when headlights are on).

I know that there are tonnes of kits online through the various aftermarket places, I just have zero idea as to what is involved and which direction to head in.

    Cheers lads.

From what i understand, there is a headlight wiring mod to do with a relay. So you can run full voltage to the bulbs. With a more thick gauge wire, you should be able to use a higher output globe, like a 100w or something

I wonder if anyone here has done this to their mk1 and could comment on their experiences. Cheers for the reply mate

It's simple enough. add my relay for each headlight low or high beam, or both. My car had it, and improve plenty.

Narre Warren is a big drive, but I'd be willing to do it. What do I actually need in the way of parts?

VW offered driving lights for the mk1 probably for good reason.

I added relays to my MK2, made a massive difference. I've also replaced the 55/60 watt bulbs in the headlights with 60/100's.

Before, when I turned on the driving lights the current draw made my high beam dimmer (and didn't give much current to the driving lights either). It was brighter not turning on the driving lights. Now I can run all 4 lights AND supply enough current to feed the brighter bulbs.

I do a lot of country driving at night and it's much safer now. You can actually see the wombats on the road and have enough time to avoid them.

Lots of wombats driving around in the daylight too these days.

Thanks guys. Marcus and I are going to do the relay mod this Thursday night, I'll take pics before/after so you can see what it did for me

cheers heaps, last week I was looking at completely replacing the headlights... crazy that a $10 mod can fix this issue.
