So after a bit of fiddling and kicking.. the issue is a warm/screwed inner tie rod end on the passenger side.. the ball joint moves around... Causing the wheel to move a bit too much for the guy to register it.

1 - Are there any ways to limit the movement easily? Just needs to pass pink slip

2 - Does anyone have a spare one laying around that we could buy/steal/borrow

3 - If not, does anyone know who might have one or a similar part that would fit..

It is kind of urgent since we only have around 10 days before it needs a blue slip, which we would rather not do.. happy to pay in cash/beer/favours

      Good news everyone.. its registered..

Replaced the screwed tie rod and we are good to go..

No to add - some sort of cooling device so we don't boil with no a/c.. some sort of stereo and a bash plate or 3.

Also been in talks with Unique Car magazine about doing a story on the car and the rally, so that should be good.

we will be doing a bash plate next week... want me to try to do a 2nd for you guys? we've added a heavy duty front end to ours for some sh*ts n giggles, but with some slight modding it should bolt up to a factory front bar.

How are you making it, how does it bolt on?
Only issue would be getting it/shipping it could be exxy..

I thought about making one using similar material to the rest of the car.. alfoil and bog..

Hope you're using industrial strength alfoil and 100 mph tape to hold it on.

And congrats on getting it registered.

              Cheers

So, had a bit of time to do a good old service on the might golf.. seemed to be running quite low on oil, think we drained only 2l out of it.. so was only running a liter short..

Bled the brakes.. they are still ****.. do stock mk1s have crap brakes or is there something wrong with ours. Pads seems fine, rotors are fine, no air in the lines etc..but..

The car stalls under hard brakes. I read somewhere that this could be cause by a vacuum leak? Maybe a leak into the booster, which would cause the stalling as well as maybe the crap brakes?
What is the best way to check this or test it?

Still trying to get rid of a few extra parts we got, so if any of you guys need mk1 parts go look in the forsale section.. got a nice shiny dashboard just waiting for you.

Standard MK1 brakes are crap. That's why everyone upgrades to MK1 GTI brakes.

Does it stall while you're moving and stand on the brakes or stall when it's not moving and you hit the brakes hard? Or both?

                  Cheers

Haven't noticed when I have been stationary, but in saying that when i'm not moving I have never felt the need to jump on the brakes.. I'll try and check tomorrow if its only under motion or not.,

What difference does that make? Brake booster vs a different issue?

Ok so may have been mis-diagnosed.. Seems to stall even when you don't brake hard, if you drop it into neutral with no throttle it will stall or get very close to stalling.. Seems to have gotten worse after oil change.
Would increasing the idle help at all? seems to idle quite low.

Another fun fact.. apparently if you have the demister on full heat the car trys to light on fire.. Where driving along with demist on and all of a sudden smelt and saw some smoke.. Killed the engine and fans and it went away.. so thinking the heater core got too hot and started burning or melting something.. fun and games

Bump the idle up, at least to 800 rpm, maybe more if it's still stalling.

The smoke might be from a short circuit melting a wire. It's not unusual for old Golfs to be rewired by people who are electrically challenged and don't put fuses into their handywork. Turn on the demister for a second or two and look for where the smoke is coming from.

Still need to install a light bar on the front because i dont trust the head lights, and it kind of needs a clean.. but here it is..
