Hola.

So i was thinking that for my next project i would pick up an engine to rebuild for the golf. However, my knowledge of engines that fit into the golf without any modifications is extremely limited if not non-existant.

Would anyone be able to enlighten me about what engines actually do fit into a mk1 with no mods required that still runs an 020 box, i know goon has an audi engine that is turboed (correct me if im wrong) that fits straight in.

A 1.8 8v in your car is a real easy upgrade and cheap. Next up would be a 2 litre block with worked 8v head - good for an easy 130+ hp. I've got a 2 litre 16v motor that's good for 140hp sitting in my mate's shed. It's going into my MK2.

If you're after serious horsepower an ABF motor comes standard with 150hp and goes to 200hp with a bit of money spent on it, all naturally asperated. Spend a lot of money and you'll get 300hp out of it but by then it's going to be a cranky b**ch.

At least $4500 is needed to go down the turbo 20v route and you start with 200hp. There's a couple of guys in Germany getting over 1100hp out of their engines but I hate to think how much it cost them.

i would be going for a mix of driveability and horsepower, not large sums, but in the 3 digit mark. how much would a 2l 16v cost for a blown engine? And do they fit straight in?

Also, would an engine transplant mean an engineering cert even thoughyou havent modified anything in the car?

I felt my 1.8L mk3 engine worked wonders with a close ratio gearbox and a good exhaust w. 32/36 weber. Gave some of the newer Hondas a run for their money haha

I have an RV 8V and gearbox $400 and you can have it, pick up in ACT

The RV HAS 78kW and 105hp. I am sure if you do some work and pissible connect a 2.0 block to the head or stroke it you can get a fair bit extra out of it.

yep, just keeping my mind open for new ideas at the moment. i dont even know if the engines hit 100 hp so a bit more power is always nice

The engine I have (AEB) isn't exactly a straight swap, by any means. The stock mk1 mounts fit straight in but that's about it. I needed new manifolds, turbo, oil filter housing, fuel rail the list goes on.. then there's the wiring. Not a quick, cheap straight forward conversion.

If you want something quick and easy to put into your car I'd be looking at a mk3 2litre has everything you'd want. Not hard to put a turbo on it either. Much less complicated because almost everything will work out of the box.
