  • Mk1 gtd

Back in November 2013 I bought a Mars Red, 1980 MK1 GTD not running with a suspected headgasket leak. After what has been an arduous 6 months, I finally have the car running and on the road.

I have done a fair bit of research about this car and still come up empty handed. The engine number it is registered with is a CK prefix, but that would mean a 1.5 N/A Diesel but I know for certain it is a 1.6 Turbo Diesel. Another thing that throws me about this car is the fact that VIN decoders tell me its a MK1 Golf, Made in 1980 but not the assembly plant or region it was made in.

The gentleman I bought the car off said he had contacted VW and was told it's a 1 of 5 special prototype given to VW bosses and executives sort of deal. This is a story I have heard from multiple sources but am yet to turn anything up with web searches.

I am very curious to find out the origin of this wonderful car and maybe hear about it's past whether it be a genuine GTD or converted GLD or what....

This is the car in question.

Any information or comments are appreciated. Thank you. -Alek.

Your link already states that it's a conversion and the fact that it's a 5 speed should be a dead givaway. Have you checked the actual engine number on the engine, not just the paperwork?

Congrats on getting it registered, what are your plans now that it's on the road?

    Cheers

    Paul

I've not had a chance to look at the engine number as the one time I tried having a look I couldn't find anything. The only number I can find doesn't have any sort of prefix?

It is a four door Mitch.

I'm not entirely convinced that it is just a conversion with things like the VIN nobody can explain to me and GTI trim.

I plan on keeping it fairly dead stock as it is and taking advantage of the great fuel economy it has. Yesterday I did about 150 kilometers on about 1/8th of a tank which works out to be 1200kilometers a tank. I know thats a stretch but yeah. I still have a few kinks to work out but she's slowly getting there. Going to get her nice and clean and just keep her that way.

Also wondering if anyone knows about how to contact volkswagen to find out about the history of this car without spending $75 on a birth certificate that takes months to arrive.

I'm envious. I do over 900 k's per week in my MK2 GTI and the fuel just doesn't quite make it that far. 1200 or even 1000 ks would be awesome + you've got a bit of power as well.

Best of both worlds, no wonder you want to keep it dead stock.

          Pix please.

GTD or not I'm still super jealous of your turbo Alek

You'll find the second half of the tank gets used quicker, 3.7 is a bit low even for our diesels, 1.6TD is around 4.5 if driven with a light foot. Mines got a leaky injector pump and gets driven pretty heavy footed on long rural roads but still gets about 6L/100Km, would be heaps lower with a 5 speed

I'm going to have to fill her up to the brim and drive her until she runs out and then find out how much fuel she takes to top up again to get an accurate grasp on just how good the fuel economy is. I've done something while putting my gear linkages back together and I can't select 1st or 2nd. So I have to give her a bit in 3rd and slip the clutch quite badly to get her moving. Quite frustrating.

Also I've done a bit through the hills and the Weitech coil overs handle exceptionally now that I have tyres with tread on them. Still want a free day where I can play with the ride height and camber though, doesn't feel quite right to my driving style at the moment.

I have a bit of a photo dump for you guys that are interested.

Sorry they aren't the greatest photo's. The white stockies are off my old petrol golf that has been defected for a couple years now and have good tread until I can afford tyres for the Audi stockies that I think look awesome.
The coolant leak was after a drive to Victor Harbour (about 50Km from where I live) most of the way 100Km/h and up a notorious hill and she managed fine until I pulled into the car park and turned the car off and after about a minute she started pissing coolant every where. Bottom radiator hose split right on the hose clamp.

i just ring the service department of the local vw stealership, and give them the VIN and they give me the history of the car, warranty issues, recalls etc. handy when purchasing!

take a pic of the engine bay i'll tell you what it is

no chance you'll get 1200 off a tank but you might get 750, which is great off 40L.

I might stop past the VW stealership tomorrow as it is only 100m from where I work but am skeptical they will know anything as they wouldn't order parts for me!!

I've found out a few things about this car over the past couple days. I get about 700k from 40L local city driving and oftening hitting boost through first and second and sometimes third. (it's hard to resist when it chugs out insane amounts of black smoke )

And I have also found that the brakes don't work without any brake fluid! So I now have to bleed all the air from the lines to get semi-functional brakes again. sigh.

I'll try and get a photo of the bay for you sometime while I am working on it tomorrow for you.
