    Hi, I have 1976 GOLF LS 1600 Carby (solex 34 pict5)

    and I just have changed breaker point and
    set the gap and timing with just feeling (I am no mechanic) and idle stays high and can't get it lower with adjust screws

    So I thought I should start again from setting the point gap with very correctly

    but does the gap can really affect the idle and everything? even my mechanic just set it with his eyes once.. so i did it too
    and he didnt use the timing light either..


    anyways Now I am here to buy the tools (timing light, feeler gauge)
    and Will start from the beggining.

    I have no Idea how to set these very properly

    so please help me out of my thaught

    1. how to set up point gap?
    2. how to set timing ?
    3. how to set Idle?

    Point 1 - I have no idea how a Mk1 is set up but the basics are the same on all the old dungers.

    changing the gap changes the dwell & the ignition timing. change of ignition timing changes the idle speed.

    Set the dwell (preferably) or the gap (2nd choice) then set the timing, then the idle. If the idle is really high then it will have brought some timing on so you may have to set timing, set idle then repeat.

    Don't forget to remove the coating off the points face & add a smidgin of grease for the points cam follower & if it's mechanical advance a squirt of oil down the dizzy shaft.

      Was it idling high before you did the points? What revs is it idling at?

      Fast idle usually means too much air/fuel is getting in. You could have an air leak in the carby or intake manifold. Grab the carby and see if you can move it. Does it wobble slightly? Tighten up the bolts holding it to the manifold. Do the manifold bolts need tightening? Does the idle screw make any difference to the revs when you turn it?

      The carby might need a good clean or a gasket kit put through it.

      When you can, get a transistorised ignition to replace the points. Points are ancient technology and have no place in the 21st century.
