Got a 2L 8V from an Audi 80 in my garage. Was in my last MKI with a Sidedraft weber. Went good, no matter what revs or gear it pulled. Gave some new cars a suprise on the hills!!!

sorry guys. been a bit misconstrewed. (thats the word right)
Stu (the stu) is a mate of mine, and i was being um, sarcastic. I'm aware big valve heads cost alot and flat tops and stuff. It was a joke.
I'd chuck in a cam and HD valve springs, maybe a rebuilt head, for improved flow (basic stuff ie port matching etc) and that'd be enough for now. lightened fly wheel maybe.
and the only reason I didn't suggest a 16V is cause you're looking maybe 1 G to buy one, and then the cost of modifying it is greater. ie two cams, more valves etc. The tourque in an 8V would make up for the loss in top end power over a 16V imo.

Mine revs clean of the tacho and is still pulling strong. (7000rpm+)
The MK 3 8vs are a nice thing too, I have one in my other MK 1.

What injection is it running on? or is it running carbie?

A sports cam will also improve it greatly and while that is being put in clean up the head and do some small porting work along with good exhaust flow will improve the performance you receive from the cam, you can easily do this yourself. Bigger valves and new valve springs are nice but amplify the cost greatly as things need to be machined.
Post the engine number and what fueling the car is running, that will greatly help.
i would like something different...maybe a newer motor...whats a vr6 motor cost? i know its been done but that would b very quick. or maybe a mk4 gti motor? what are they like?
thanks for all the input guys its gooood

mk1 VR6 is way difficult. it's tough getting it into a mk2 let alone a mk 1!! that'll set you back like 8-10K i think. all up. and that's just the conversion, no eng mods etc.
I know heavy duty vavle springs are lik 70-80 US but they are to suit standard valves..
