whats wrong with what you've got now?

upgrade to a volov fuel metering thingy, uprated injectors, phat cam and hardened valve springs, and big valves, flat top pistons if you can find them maybe, bit of port & polish, and you'll be set. that'll put out 120+ hp, and should be a reliable combo. cheaper than a 16V with similar work done it it...

Those Mk II 8v GTI motors go pretty hard in a MK 1, are you sure yours is working properly?

Mine revs clean of the tacho and is still pulling strong. (7000rpm+)

The MK 3 8vs are a nice thing too, I have one in my other MK 1.

The 8v engine you have will be perfect for what you want mate, more than capable and stronger than nails.

What injection is it running on? or is it running carbie?

Or if you wnna go crazy, drop a 3.2L R32 engine in it!! I'd love to see that!
Seriously, you have a light car, you dont need too much power to have fun. Sounds like you have a good engine already, so as others said, do some work to it and it'll be heaps of fun!!

                2.0 16v for maximum fun

1.8 16v for lots of high reving fun

2.0 8v for lots of torque fun.

Knowing that 16v's are pretty pricey here in Oz 2.0 8v could be way forward (or 2.1 i you dare to be different!)

                    I disagree...

a std KR 16v is 139bhp so will be more power, less work (modifying) being on the engine therefore very reliable.

The current engine will be fine imo for a good cheap beater. If its the gti engine im thinking of they are quite restricted. Dual port downpipe and manifold or extractors, the vw dual downpipe may be a little hard to get for a mk1, not to sure.

A sports cam will also improve it greatly and while that is being put in clean up the head and do some small porting work along with good exhaust flow will improve the performance you receive from the cam, you can easily do this yourself. Bigger valves and new valve springs are nice but amplify the cost greatly as things need to be machined.

Post the engine number and what fueling the car is running, that will greatly help.

Agreed, the work you listed Jarred is quite alot, with lots of machining and engine rebuilding and will still pull less than a standard kr running on digi or kjet.

Sorry, but that is a fair way off the mark!!

A big valve head is a couple of grand on its own

What you're talking about is a fully built engine - you can't just drop in new pistons and big valves and drive away!

There is NO point tuning an 8v unless race regs restrict you to do so. It is far cheaper to drop in a 16v or even a 2.0 8v
