  • Intake bolt drama's

Trying to remove my intake manifold, removed 5 bolts smoothly but on had to give me drama, it's key that the torx tool goes into is worn, and spinning in the socket. Is there any suggestions on how I could get it out without removing the head or the engine?..... Please someone help!!!!!!!!!

I don't think they are torx. Should have been a 5 or 6mm allen key from memory. The way I get rounded ones off is by knocking in a 12 point/spline bit. Never failed me yet.

Have you got room to hammer in a slightly larger torx bit?

      Vice grips?

Put all the other bolts back in tight to take the stress off this bolt to make it easier to get out.

        Thanks guys,

but yes I have tried the 12 point bit also but no luck. Very hard to get a hammer behind there to give it a couple of good knocks. No go with vice grips because the bolt is to close to the extractors. I'll try once again with the 12 point bit if not I think I might have to die grind it off some how.

        Appreciate your input guys.

See if you can get hold of a stud extractor. It will require you to drill a hole down the centre of the torx socket. Then insert the appropriate stud extractor and use it to get the bolt out.

I have also drilled through the manifold (I didnt want it anyway) and through the bolt in question (as in perpendicular to the bolt itself) to get one of these out once. If you dont need the manifold anymore...

Bash a 10 or 11 mm socket over the top of it on an extension. Use a six sided socket and hammer it all the way on if it slips use a smaller one. Sounds like the heads coming off though

I was in this situation recently except it was one of the allen bolts holding the driver side engine mount on. You've got a few options most have been mentioned above:

                - Use a slightly bigger torx bit and hammer in
                - Hammer a socket over the bolt
                - Use an ez-out or screw extractor
                - Get a dremel and cut a slot in the end to use a flat head screw driver
                - Use dremel to cut head of bolt remove intake and use vice grips/pliers to remove remains
                - Use a fine punch and hammer the very edge of the bolt to loosen it enough for pliers or vice grips (last resort which I had to use. usually results in ruined bolt)

Thanks cabby90, I'm going to try the 10mm socket trick then work my way down the list. Thanks for your help

Well i can officially say the intake is now off

But I'm not proud of how I managed to get it off, I tried all of the above and still didn't come off. What was supposed to be my last resort didn't work, yes tried to cut the bolt off with the dremill drill but the motor burnt out sooooooooooo I went into the shed and got the good old sledge out. Stood on the scuttle panel and two whacks it was off

So I guess we could add that to the list.

Hope you have not done something to the head that you cannot see. Sometimes you do have to resort to the Irish spanner, but the trick is knowing how hard to hit AND where to hit

                        Head seems to be fine.

On Josh's car we unscrewed the injector holders and dropped coins in there with a bit of silastic and screwed the injector holders back down.

I think 5c pieces were the right size, maybe10c.

On one of my heads I left some old injectors in there and sealed up the fuel line connection on the injector.

Some companies that sell carby kits sell dummy injectors to block off the ports.

Another head I have has had the ports filled with epoxy metal.

I've seen them welded up too.

Another way that works really well is to use gearbox drain plugs, they screw straight in in place of the injector holders. The kind with the 17mm hex.
