The engine is the easiest bit to fix. I`d be more interested in checking that it had no rust in the floors etc. If you are not worried about originality, you might as well get one that someone has modified and spent lots on for cheaper than a stock one. No one except a purist can tell if its an original GTI or a lookalike and it doesn`t really matter as a drivers car, both are great fun.

That's a big ask! I probably have some slides that I took as I was always into Golfs. Unfortunately it only lasted 1 night until it broke a CV or drive shaft or something. I remember speaking to him about his choice of cars and was always sceptical if the Golf was suitable for Australian rallies.
Do you know what happened to it and the other one? Did the KB one end up in Chris Heyer's hands for Bathurst or is that another replica?
