First things first, you'll have a hard time finding a mk1 Gti in Australia as there were never sold here.
Not exaclty sure of all the specs of the standard mk1 GLS but I know they have 55Kw(76hp) smaller than Gti brakes and no antiroll bars.
    Gti Specs are about:
    1600 8v Specifications
Engine: 1588cc 4cylinder SOHC 8 valve with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, producing 110bhp @6100rpm and 103 ft lb torque at 4500rpm.
    Weight: 840kg.
    Length/Width: 3815/1628mm.
    Wheelbase: 2400mm.
    Track (F/R): 1405/1372mm.
    Wheels/Tires: 5.5J*13 with 175/70 HR13.
Brakes: 239mm vented front discs, 226mm rear drums.
    Performance: 0-100 in 9.0secs, top speed 112mph.

    1800 8v Specifications
Engine: 1781cc 4cylinder SOHC 8 valve with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, producing 112bhp @5800rpm and 109 ft lb torque at 3500rpm.
    Weight: 880kg
    Length/Width: 3815/1628mm.
    Wheelbase: 2400mm.
    Track (F/R): 1405/1372mm.
    Wheels/Tires: 5.5J*13 with 185/60 HR13. Also 14inch wheels.
Brakes: 239mm vented front discs, 226mm rear drums.
    Performance: 0-100 in 8.4secs, top speed 114mph.

Those performance figures look a bit fudged though I reckon they're quicker

You wont find a Mk1 GTI for sale in Oz, but get a 1.8 carby version. Nearly the same power, easier to fix and great fun. Even the 1.6s get up and go.

You can even inject the car, with the simple kjet injection system used on early Mk1s and it`ll be a GTI in all but name. Purists will look down on the copy, but you`ll be grinning too much to care.

The power figures on paper dont do em justice. Driveability and grin factor counts for more in my book.

Buy one, they are great cars.

Just as a point of note, 5 doors go as fast as 3 doors and are cheaper to buy and there are more non flogged 5 doors about.

Where are you based, there are a few for sale in sydney at the moment and also check the for sales on the forum.

Thanks, guys for all the info.

It sounds like it may be a bit hard to find a genuine gti!

Are there any defining things that i could see on a golf that make it a gti over a gls. That arent easily modified or done often? Some pics would be cool if need be, i dont know alot about these cars!!

Other thing was wat does the standard gti engine look like compared to the gls since it had K-jet?

        Thanks again!!

Been looking at pics on net, did the MK1 gti 76 ever come with chrome bumpers?

I like the chrome better, i think its the old skool look!

                mk1 Golfs

Get a good one and you will love it whether its a GTI or a GLS.
They are easy to modify and most problems can be solved by other forum members.
Top Gear gurus called the mk1 GTI the car of the century (last one)
Says it all really just remember to buy a good one as a rocket will probably put you off for life.

The GTI was first made in late 1979 and they stopped bringing Golfs to Oz in 1980. You cannot get a 1976 GTI. You can get a 1976 Golf with a GTI engine. Whether it runs carbs or injection, it`ll still fly. The engines all externally look the same, 1.6, 1.8 or even 2L, so that doesnt` detract from the originality.

First GTIs were made in 1976.
First RHD GTIs were made in 1979.

1976 GTIs had a funny oil cooler, not the beetle type.

Andrew Cowan entered a GTI in the 1976/7 Southern Cross Rally.

I have a 1977 GTI brochure (8/76) that is in English.

The 1.8L came out in 9/82 there are a couple of physical differences,
                          - sump I believe is different - larger capacity
                          - top radiator hose outlet is between cyl 3-4 (1.6L cyl 1-2)
                          - 2L engines I think are a couple mm's taller in height but I may be wrong..

GTI's are 20mm lower than standard, bilstein shocks standard
wider steel wheels before alloy's were standard
Different interior - seat(checked style trim upto 9/80 then went to striped)/ carpet style & material, new style dash from 9/80
                          just to name a few.

It's all relatively small difference's but it is easy to build a replica.

I'll try and find the GTI history and pm'd the link if you like

Well turns out that the golf ive been looking at isnt a gti despite all the things that make it look like one! Thanks to some guys on here for running engine numbers etc!

Im unsure if i should still pick it up, needs a fair bit and i dont know what the engine etc is even like!

Are the gls easy to work on and what are they like with a fairly standard engine it was only ever ment as a toy to go to uni in and few twists! Was a bonus if it was a genuine gti
