More progress - little steps

OK I know it's sad, but I finally got to put stuff back ON to the chassis instead of the constant removal mode I have been in for the past year. Only a dry fit so the wheels can go on for its trailer trip to Melbourne, and most of it will have to be removed again when it comes back with it's roll cage... still it felt good!!!



Note the studdy bits for fast wheel changes and the disk upgrade for better stopability.

Another milestone - trailer the shell from Canberra to Melbourne for John Rawson to do his magic. I told him I didn't want to see it till July at which time it should be sporting a spiffy new roll-cage, some serious chassis plating and strengthening, seat mounts and floor plates (AND NO MORE RUST!!).

Hehe, you assume that I knew what I was doing when I started.... WRONG!!
I have had fantastic support from Canberra VW and of course the fourums, but basically it started with a $500 mk1 and a desire to build a "nice" older rally car.

The real danger comes when you start seeing everything as an oportunity to use the sandbaster and apply fresh paint. I have bags and bags of beautifully prepped brackets, braces and misc bits of Golf scattered through the shed. - Sad really....

Next step is painting - the inside front gets a coat of POR15 then white top-coat. The exterior gets some sanding/priming then more acrylic top-coat. Then I start stuffing bits back in and identifying the gaps (for instance I got webbers and rotary fuel pump and no clue as how I should arange the plumbing )

BTW The *BEST* finish on any single part of the car so far is (wait for it...) the shaft that runs inside the steering column - something that no one will ever see again

Awesome I really admire the dedication that this project is going to demand of you! It may take a while, but it will sure be worth it in the end Keep us updated with pics, especially the cage when you get the car back in July

Apart from a G-Grind, twin 40 DOCE webbers, new dizzy/coil, windage tray, cam splash guard and 210mm clutch, the motor is going in more or less untouched.
I understand from Peter that it was re-built not long ago by Michael (Canberra VW southern branch) and it will do me just fine while I learn how to keep the car (mostly) out of the trees.
Pete has found me another 1600 to start stripping and building with a few more horses but this will wait till AFTER my first year with the car.
And before anyone asks, CAMS give lots of freedoms to cars under 1600 (and pre-1986) so I plan on keeping it 8v 1600 (for now....)

I figure if it is clean to start out - it should be easier to clean after each event.
Even the underside gets the treatment...
