Just buy a new cap from any diesel service place & hopefully your leak will be gone.
Went to the local diesel place an they said they couldn't help me until Monday; so with a bit of Commodore washer hose, a random screw and a MacGyver mindset I came up with this:
It seems to work so far!
So my Golf has been blowing a bit more blue smoke than usual after the oil change, so I bought some 25w60 today, and I'll put it in on the weekend. Also sometimes while I'm driving the radio turns off and the indicators stop working, but a wobble of the relay and all is good again.
Interestingly, I was at Sprint Auto Parts today and when I got back to my car a bloke was standing beside it. It turns out his mate is the one who brought it over from VIC after the original owner died and her daughter sold it. He said it was so good to see it was still on the road, and that they used to have a heap of fun driving it around. Small world eh?
If your radio and indicators are failing intermittently this is current track 15 in the circuit board that is having problems. Usually this is caused by corrosion within the fuse box that increases the impedance of the circuits.
If you search around a bit you should find some how-to's (perhaps on other forums, I can;t quite remember) about taking apart the fuse box and fixing these problems.
If you are patient its acutally not too hard to dis-assemble the fuse box. Once you are in you can repair old corroded tracks with wire links or you might be able to find a replacement fuse box. Petrol and diesel fuse boxes are the same.

Often I find, the clips in the fusebox that the relays push into, develop splits where they push onto the circuit board pins. This will cause a faulty circuit. You can either replace the split clip with another that is from an unused circuit, or solder the clip onto the circuit board pin. you will understand what I mean once you have pulled the circuit board apart. The plastic casing separates from the PC board if you undo some clips and carefully lever it apart with a screwdriver. Don't forget to disconnect the battery and label all the plugs and wires before pulling them out!

Thanks for the advice I think I'll only really look into the problem if it starts happening quite often, as it's my daily driver and I can't really afford to have it pulled apart for more than a few hours. That is, unless I get the motivation to do it before hahah
Found this today at an antique store of all places, for $8. Not the same as my mirror currently on there but I'm certain it's a "flag" mirror (not up with the terminology) correct me if I'm wrong
So anyway, I get it fired up and notice my brake lights are staying on. Traced the problem to the first brake light switch.
Thought it was just the corrosion but the lights are still saying on after a clean up, so I just unplugged it and the secondary switch works just fine.
Now the opposite is true, the brake lights won't work unless both switches are connected :/
