  • Today's disc brake replacement story.

This is just a standard rotor replacement and a caliper swap so I don't need to make a super tutorial out of it. It's even easier than the Cordoba drum replacement.

Just thought I'd throw some pictures up for the record and for reference if anyone wants to see how it all goes together without pulling their own car apart.

I hit a snag when it came time to re-install the calipers. Sometime around 1979 or so VW decided to install calipers that use a left handed thread on the hose fitting. Of course the caliper I had cleaned up has a right handed thread. The brake shop is making me some new hoses at the moment. The brake shop guy didn't believe me ! He had to try threading the hose into something for himself!

Removed. Note the offending LH thread hose in the top left corner.

    New disc installed.

I'll add some photos of the completed job tomorrow when I get the new hoses.

The new hoses had to be made 10cm longer as well as having the right handed tread on them.

FYI I learnt a couple of things during this episode,

The type of flare on the ends of the pipe is DIN (also known as ISO bubble)
The diameter of the solid brake lines is 4.75mm
The threaded connectors are M10x1 thread pitch

Here's the new lines. I had the old line cut and the rubbers put on the new line. About $50 to have the lines made up.

All bolted up now. We got a brief downpour and the brakes picked up a little surface rust. Amazing how fast that happens!

There's getting to be more paint under this car than there is on top now!

    Through the wheel.
