It's a 1980 GLD, ive taken out the diesel motor and replacing it with a 1.8l 8v motor. I'm trying to reuse some parts which can also adapt with both motors. It's not going to be a everyday car that ill be driving in and I'm aware of the final gear ratio on a 4 speed box.
What are your thoughts. Should I Just leave the 4 speed boxMK1, 1976 golfLS, 4 door (SOLD! Will be missed)

I believe you are getting it wrong. A diesel engine revs a lot lower than a petrol. Therefore the gearing in a diesel gearbox (ie final drive ratio) is much taller (smaller numerically). So rather than screaming its head off the revs will be lower for a given speed than for a "petrol" gear box. This would make highway cruising easy so long as the engine has the torque to pull it. A 1.8 should handle it quite well.2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son

You are wrong.Do the research.I couldn't be bothered seeing you don't want to agree.Originally posted by Bora Sport View PostI believe you are getting it wrong. Thats a little harsh, but to all - take it from a dude that's done more than 200,000km in a mk1 GLD - the diesel 4 speed definately revs lower (but not a lot) than the petrol 4 speed, and would be (and is) just fine behind a petrol engine.Originally posted by Stanton View PostYou are wrong.Do the research.I couldn't be bothered seeing you don't want to agree.
Consider that in my old LS, 1.6 petrol, the standard 4 speed had me doing 4200rpm at 120km/h! Woooo!'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

4 speed gear box will fit fine, but you will have problems with trying to fit 5 speed gearbox without having to do some modifications to the gearbox mount as 5 speed is 5-10 cm to long....also unless you are good with the electrics dont do the engine conversion as you might strugle to find someone to do it for you, n thats y i sold my mk1
shame.....
