You can buy replacement door interior trim from Newton Commercial in the UK. They have gone to great lengths to make the correct tooling so the product is spot on.
so you're going to cover just the top bit with vinyl, or the whole door card bit as well?
leaving the top part of the door exposed looks pretty good.
I'm just covering the top part. I like the look of it when it's exposed, but my doors aren't painted there. One side is black and the side in the photo is a slightly different shade to the outside, and now scratched up from removing the old pad thing.
Well thats a good start then. Did you swap over the wiring, fuel pump and accumalator as well ??
Yeah, everything was swapped over, even the fuel tank.
The interior is getting really close to finished. Feels much better to look at it in the garage and see it shaping up.
Here's the back half all fitted. You can't really see but the parcel shelf and side supports are in the back and vinyl dyed black rather than the brown they used to be. Happy with the way they turned out.
The new carpet that I've got is not a perfect fit. It took some negotiation to get it in neatly but being in two parts did help. The MK2 centre console sits too high when clipped into the dash, but resting on the floor it doesn't look too bad.
My 1kg extinguisher will fit perfectly here which is neat.
Had a quick go on the doors with the vinyl. It's going to work out but we're redoing it on the weekend with some heat so that we can mold it to the shape of the window opening rather than cutting it.
Can someone give me good info on how to fit the MK1 front seats? The slide mechanism in the middle at the front has been dismantled on my seats so I'm quite confused.
Thanks mate! I got the driver's side in and will do the passenger tonight. It's looking so close to complete inside. Really wish my steering hub adapter would turn up.

Today was a super productive day - my favourite kind. Headed up to Hornsby early and grabbed a car trailer for 3 hours.
Loaded him up and got strapped down for the trip. Over the last couple of nights I finished putting the interior together completely, but forgot to take photos. I'll grab some when my steering hub adapter arrives.
From my place we took it to The Rev Doctor who was recommended by Peter Bower at Bower Power. Scott is a really great bloke and I'm confident he'll have the car sorted to 100%.
After that I took a drive down to see Matt at Camden GTI. He really came through and I managed to score a whole mess of bits for a great price. Brand new front and rear chrome bumpers, rubbing strips and end caps, longer wheel studs that I need for my spacers, two front grilles, passenger side shelf for under the dash, a handbrake cover and a cluster surround.
One thing I am desperately chasing is a driver's side headlight surround with the chrome still in tact. Can anyone help out?
The plan now is:
- Scott gets the car running
- Drive it up the road from his workshop to a bodyshop to have the paintwork touched up in places and buffed
- Fit the new bumpers, grille, front lip, badges, new taillights and new wheels
- Take it in for a blue slip and get it registered
- Off to Peter Bower for a once over and a retune
And that's it! It felt amazing to have it out of the shed and in the sunlight. Sitting in it makes me want to drive it so badly. Hopefully it won't be long now.
