We used a Zinc primer on a mates hilux chassis after some welding and sanding back to metal.
Its a 2 in one, protects against rust and primes at same time, looks good to boot.

As for the Hondahhh, dont do it

Stick with the mk1!!! Your inspiring me to take on my own little mk1 project next year once I've finished high school, plus I like the style of your orange one so hopefully this will be even better!!

You need to use etch primer on bare metal george, go to super cheap and you can get it in a spray can.

Dan wanna facebook me the link for the zinc?

Yeah cookie28, cheers man but its just getting so hard you know. Like i take a step forward and then 4 backwards. I would be understanding about it, although its happened ever since i owned any mk1's haha. And frankly its just really upsetting when you're going somewhere important and the golf breaks down on you - a lot of times. Yeah i guess im only 19 and havnt experienced as much as others on the forum but i've done this to the orange golf and it just had problem after problem, and im scared the same happens with the white one.

Peter, i've heard that etch primer is the one, as it reacts with the metal, cheers for that. What do people treat their welds after welding, as i've seen after people weld if not treated it rusts straight away. Wink-wink Pete Jones hehe ?

Alright so i finally stopped working on the orange golf, and had time for the swallowtail today. Felt like a productive day. Uncle borrowed the gas bottle (its hit bottle but my gas) and i got it back today. Last night i fab'd up some tabs for the wiring harness to re route. Ill put picks of that later. I made L shapes and welded them to the body, and drilled holes in the so that i can cable tie the wire loom on to. Should work great !

Here they are, with the crappy pic

And here im putting it to the test, looks cool 8-)

Also started with the heating system. Theres no chance in hell im spending $250 on a universal heater, and i love to be innovative and make **** work, so i started modding my heater today so that it doesnt pro-trude into the bay. Im going to get a smaller fan, probably from a motorbike and drop the whole heater box by a cm so that theres enough space for the fan to get air. Basically im only going to use it for heater, so re-circulating the air in the cabin will be fine.
However i really have noooo clue what to do with the de-mister yet, if anyone has some ideas please share. Heres the heater

Also grinded down the heater box hole, and made a cover up sheet for the hole. I think its 1.2mm which is pretty thick, but i got it for free, which otherwise is $60 something from bunnings, feck that. DIY FTW !!

Ive started welding in the sheet already, pics soon.

Mate of mine was selling an exhaust i've wanted for a long time. I got it at a ridiculous price, and these things go for $450, so im happy. Its a Varex exhaust that has a motor on it which allows the exhaust note to be LOUD, or quiet at a push of a button. Being a P plater and in Vic, you get ass raped by the authority's here, so having one of these will be pretty cool. I test fitted it and it fits snuggly away, so you cant see the oval bit. I will get a new smaller tip to suit my liking.
