  • Mk 1 rubbing sound on right hand turns

I noticed a rubbing sound today when turning the steering wheel to the right and turning corners

No sound when straight or left hand turn

    Any ideas?

In the cabin or through the wheel?

Could be a brake line that has come unclipped from the strut...

It sounds like it is at the RHS front wheel

I'll get under there today to see if I can see anything obvious

It's the copper contact ring on the back of the steering wheel (or steering wheel boss if your wheel is after market). It's what links your horn button to the rest of the car, because you can't have a cable on something that rotates..

Sounds to me like you might have a knackered CV or your brake line is rubbing on your tyre line I said. Does it make a noise in reverse?

I'll see if it does it in reverse, what do you lubricate the horn ring with as well?

The noise is coming from the wheel

Could be your suspension or something like that dude, i used to noise jsut liek you descrive from the left front wheel, only when i turn right into corners. One day i took out my suspension and was playing around with it, and when i took it for a test drive, problem fixed.

With the car parked, turn the steering to full right lock and crawl under to see if anything is rubbing against the tyre. Could be something simple.

Yes that's what I was trying to suggest. I had the same problem. Thought it was the CV for sure.. Mine turned out to be the brake line rubbing on the tyre.

Good question, mind sounds like it is grinding sand.

The sound could also be coming from the steering column trim rubbing on the base of the wheel, Mike.

You can lubricate the ring with a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline).

                            Seriously. No innuendo intended.

I use Tamiya Switch Lubricant on horn rings.
