The 8v head is no performance head at all but can be made to work well enough, all cost related
Do you recall what year the rev limit was introduced? I was talking to Tom Brinkley last week and he felt that revving a Golf past 8500 was a bit of a pointless exercise anyway. I know the first owner of my car was one of those who pushed for the introduction of rev limiters in AF2.

My car runs a Celica motor. The first and second owners of my car were adament that they couldn't have afforded to run a Golf motor. That was back when people were importing Judd engines. Besides the Toyota managed to hold it's own against the Golf engined cars of the day, managing a round win at AIR in 1983 and being the third AF2 car home at the inaugaral Adelaide GP support race in 1985.

To be honest I've never had anything to do with circuit racing but i do remember Tom explaining it to me quite some time ago when I spoke with Tom to get some advice for my engine build. I'm sure that with no rev limit all competitors were pushing engines to the point where they fail, (including vw's) many people dragged their cars home with broken engines... not really fun for racing on a budget.

I the only reason that I can think of for people saying the vw motor in F2 was fragile would be due to it revving higher than others and getting those few extra horses other engines couldn't, just speculation on my part. In general vw blocks and cranks are considered very strong. With the imposed 8500rpm limit I doubt the 1600's would ever experience an engine failure.

I'm pretty new to these cars, but that's pretty much what I figure. You don't have any pics of conrods and cranks handy for comparison do you?

I know a bloke who used to use 8v 1600s in his off road buggie, he had a bog standard motor in it, sat it on a burnout pad and smoked a set of 35" mud tires foot flat, couldn't blow it up, they appear bomb proof

I wonder how they would go with quite a bit of boost?

in the mid 70'd VW engineers tubocharged the 1600 8V to give 160hp without "significant issues" .

            interesting huh?

the reason for the experiment was to see the strength of the engines when they were developing the diesel.

Has anyone out there got a turbocharged 8V 1600? If 160hp was with out "significant issues" surely, (with other mods like intercoolers and other "turbo" spec stuff) this would be a more popular mod, but I've never heard of a turbo 8V 1600?

I'm geussing it would be slightly less popluar because the inefficecy of the carb/turbo set up (as opposed to injected turbo), so maybe this is more feasable on a K-jet 1600/1800?

A reliable-ish 1600 8V with 160Hp is pretty good, especially with the added efficency (there I go again with the not being able to spell thing..) of a turbo as opposed to a twin carb setup???

                just my thoughts, anyone else?
