  • Mk 1 Golf engine - help

I have a Ralt RT 30 with a Mark 1 Golf engine (Australian Formula 2 1986). I was hoping to get a copy of the Engine section from a workshop manual for servicing purposes. I did not particularly want to buy the whole book as 80% of it is of no use.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Jason - Brisbane

there is much documentation at various detail levels on the VW watercooled engines, so it would be helpful for some more information - what are you really looking for? just major engine/overhaul procedures? is your fuel/ignition system vw or aftermarket?

its possible someone on here will have an old haynes or gregorys that may cover enough of the major engine servicing (torques, rebuild procedures) for you, or you may need a more comprehensive guide - then you need a bentley manual (which people dont usually give away

unfortunately, i dont have anything spare atm, but someone will. you could post this in the parts wanted section, or in the manuals section of the forum.

        good luck

            Thanks Hardcore Golfer

If you e-mail me your details i will post you an overnight bag. Thanks for you help.

For those intersested the engine has a dyno chart showing 181bhp @ 8,000 rpm, dry sump, twin webbers etc, rev limit 8,500 rpm. A strong but probably temprimental engine from this vintage would develop 200 bph and have been known to rev to 10,000 rpm. All this in a car that weighs 420kg.

            Regards

            Jason

                    for the information of all

8V golf engines have been used in racing for a long time - speedway, track, drag, hillclimb and rally.

a 1600 block will support up to about 1900cc and 10,000 rpm, the 1800 block will go to 2l or a little more and close to 10,000 rpm also, just depends on how much modification and money you can spend.

part of the reason there is a cult following for golfs at all is that the vw 8V is such a fantastic engine for modification!

I have psted some picks on the site at QR a few weeks ago.

For those interested the car ran a 56 seaconds on the clubman curcuit at QR - should be capable of 53 - 54 with a bit more practice i am told.

Golf engines biggest benifit was it was lighter and smaller in comparison to other makes at the time, similar horesepower was developed on Toyota and Ford engines - but the size / weight benifit was not as good.
There is a healthy number of these cars running around in the Australian F2 Club in NSW, google their web site and you will be able to see some of the cars which run these engines.

For most of the 80s the Golf was the engine of choice.

                      Regards

180HP+ out of a F2 Golf engine is not hard in a car that weighs bugger all.

Regards servicing - someone once told me (this was a long time ago), that F2 Golf engines (as I've sure you know) are mounted upright, whereas the engines in a road car are inclined at an angle of course.
This has all kinds of implications for cooling arrangements of course....

The bloke who originally built my 8V used to build a couple of F2 golf engine's in the old day's.

Can't remember the quoted power figure's but can clearly remember the 10G redline & on standard rod's. Blew me away when I heard this.

Also didn't forget the cost either. If you had pocket's that reached down into your sock's, it still wouldn't be deep enough.

I have posted a couple of pics at QR. Not sure how to recognise the different types of blocks, as i have only seen mine - are there some numbers etc to tell you what is what.

Will advise next time am running the car.
