to get the top down manually undo the little valve on the pump in the boot. then you can lift it up and down by hand at least.

the cabrio front brakes should be fine with a tidy up, and bigger rear drums from mk3 or seat are pretty good upgrade. bigger booster and master cylinder recommended.

your engine no-go problem sounds strange - are you saying it cranks over or not?

I can hear the starter working and moves the belt a few mm, after further inspection the bottom wheel (NEWB) doesn't spin. I have tried to move it with a socket set and lever pipe to get extra movement. Mate conveniently called me and knows his way around engines and is going to come show me/help me. The water pumps wheel turns aswell so I'm guessing its the only one that won't spin thats siezed causing it all.

        so its "nearly" turning over?

before anything else - check the battery voltage - 12.5V min.

The battery is fully charged and its definately enough CCA's. Have had battery which is near new on Charge all day. So not a problem with charge. The car hasn't been started in along time. but has power etc.

Ok so I got the beast running. Nothing a breaker bar can't un-stuck lol. Pulled the plugs cranked her over. The newb that I am I didn't think how long the fuel had been sitting in it for. A bit of CRC a few cranks and she was spinning. Put the plugs back in. pulled the air box off, the filter was absolutely ****-house! Carby was a dirty as ever. Gave it a spray and cleaned it up,
Now this is where I need some input. I have been doing some research about the 2E Pierburg Carby thats in the Cabrio they are saying to bin the 2E and get something else eg webbers, someone who previousily owned/worked on the car decided to zip tie the throttle body open?!?!?!
Is it worth me replacing the diaphrams and giving the 2E a good revival or should I just get a Webber? Are the the pierburgs reliable?

I know nothing about the Pierburg carbies.. But if people say they're a nightmare, ditch it and get something more main stream. Best to find one that's come off a running car if you can. At least then you know that it's going to be pretty close.

By zip tied open throttle body.. Are you sure you are not looking at the choke? Maybe whatever choke actuator it had on it was removed by the previous owner (for what ever reason) and they tied it open?

That's the head, not the block, man!

Yeah it looks like they've cable tied the choke open. The actuator was probably stuffed.

Nothing wrong with the pieberg if it's set up correctly.
Usual isses are the wax stat and pull down unit.
The bumpers are retrofit as the power roofs came on later models.
The Pumps can go on these and the resevoir tanks are prone to splitting too and leaking the fluid out.
Another issue is the impeller splitting so it doesn't pump any more.

A link for the Carb from the Poms

The autobox are great if maintained so usual probs low or tainted fluids.

My colour concept if money was no object olde english cream, fully cromed small bumpers with, deep red leather interior. Red mohair top.
be good to see how you get on with this.
