  • my birthday is coming up soon...

so naturally, I went and bought myself another car.

Not really, I've been looking out for a car like this for a fair while now (probably since I crashed my first 2 door) and I'm super pumped that I've finally got it! It wont be much for now, but eventually it will be completely torn down and rebuilt. I intended to build my 'ultimate' mk 1 with this shell. Something I've been dreaming about for the last 2 years, and while it's a fair way away from properly starting even, I'm already nervous and excited!

For a while, (till I save up more, practice more skills etc) It'll just be a weekend, on club reg probably. Car needs some attention. Suspension is mismatched and worn (unevenly too), brakes are almost completely non-existent (worst I've ever driven with), half the gauges dont work, leaks more fuel than it uses, and a whole bunch of clunks and rattles. There's a little bit of rust, here and there, No big holes so far. but it's been resprayed at some stage, so i'm yet to find out what it truely hides. I've already found a few spots of filler, but hopefully not too many more!

Oh, did I mentioned the car was in tassie?

5 am is a lovely time of the morning to be awake! Luckily dad just happened to be going to the airport too (for work), so I botched a free ride in, in the caprice. Skipped brekkie, cause last time it wasn't too flash at the airport, jumped on the plane, did some bird watching, and managed to get a little be of shut eye, before hitting the tarmac in Hobart just after 8am. Then it was onto the bus, into town to meet up with Tim and finally set eyes on the mk 1!

Had a check of the car, all seemed pretty good. Except for the 70's caddillac suspension, faith brakes, fuel leak, and engine idling at 200rpm. Well, hardly. Great start to the day! Cash changed hands (eventually) and I was on my way. Except that I wasn't. Fuel leak was giving me some issues, start wondering how the hell Tim managed to get it into Hobart in the first place! Anyway, with a bit of go-go gadget extender arms I got it going, and I was off.

First port of call was to get some fuel. No idea how much was in it, as the gauge was busted. Made it all of 3 kms, before it conked out, conviently just in front of a servo. Couldn't get it started again, but figured I may as well fill it up. Got it started again, but died again before I could leave the servo. Some bloke with a funny accent helped me push it back in (reminded me of Gavin!). At this stage I start thinking, what the hell could it do to lift the idle up. Didn't have any tools, so couldn't adjust the throttle position. Had a tube of gasket sealer, to try and fix the fuel leak but with mediocre results. Then it dawned on me. Adjust the idle on the carb!
Silly idiot didn't think of that sooner. So out with the handy dandy house keys, wound it back out and bob was you illegitimate uncle.

Smashed a red bull, filled up again and back on the road, and had no major issues (or food at this stage either, spare some crackers I found in my bag ), apart from the dogey suspension, brakes that were on holidays and the slight stench of fuel. Got a nice truck drivers tan too. Wheel alignment wasn't too flash, so just cruised up at 85. luckily the wind noise drained out a few of the squeaks and rattles.

It was an ace day, weather was beautiful, and I was really taken back with some of the scenery in on the way up. Naturally, took some pics.

    Road works, of course:

Just some locals going to the pub:

    working gauges:

Stopped in launie to say hello to my uncle and aunt, and kick back for an hour or two. Then a quick stop at a servo, grab some supplies (chips, chocolate, powerade, all the good stuff) then off to devonport, busting for a pee. Note, if you're ever travelling in in tassie, there are bugger all pullouts on the highway! So hit up can, when you can!

5pm. Made it to devonport for the spirit of Tas with plenty of time to spare, and luckily no more (well, new) issues.

    At spirit of Tas:

    Waiting to board:

8:30pm On board, got a good parking spot:

Somehow 4 people are meant to sleep in here:

Leaving Devonport, about 9:30. Just before I hit the sack.

Had a pretty rubbish sleep on the boat, but luckily the waters were pretty calm. Wake up call at 5:50, quickly go an smash something that resemebles brekkie on the boat, pack my things. Actually, didn't have anything to pack, so just made sure no-one had done away with my camera or GPS! lol

      6am, Beautiful sunrise in melbourne!

Getting ready to disembark: (foot on brake, cause the ramp was tilted down!, nervous moment)

      down St Kilda:

      and Home finally!

Arrive home at about 7:30 this morning, 26.5hrs, and they were all worth it!

p.s., sorry if some of the photo's are rubbish!

All the best MK1's were in Tassie.

I used to drive from Hobart to Launceston for uni every week for 3 years, my car knew that road so well. Seeing those pics made me remember some good times. Thanks for sharing.

Now you make something awesome out of this one, ok!

Yea, roads down there were pretty good. Some of the highway was a bit beaten up, but all the roads in hobart and launie were pretty good, super slammed car friendly! (except all the hills)

Yea I'm hoping it'll be pretty mickey once it's done. Don't expect any major action for a fair while. I Know everything I want to do it, it's just time, skills, space and money that I need to further develop before I fully dive into this project. I don't like starting a project without the money already there to finish it. I'll be keeping mum about the details, a few people already know, but I like a good surprise!

Yea would have been nice Josh, I didn't even stop by my grandparents place, I just wanted to get to devonport asap, just incase any more preblems arose!
