  • Wonder if they considered swapping the cams over and reversing the flow?

(Just thought I'd screw with your head some more )

Looks like a stock Polo Exhaust manifold which has a clearanced sump to run the pipe under.

Would actually be easier than a stock 1.8L exhaust to make I reckon. Less bends & angles.

Wheels have a very RS Escort feel about them too!

love the old esky's. both the driving & cooling ones

Its been done before Pete, but on the old Holden V8!

Duggan's in Reservoir manaufactured their own Cyl. heads on these engines many many moons ago to run carbs on the outside & the pipes in the valley

It would be more than just swapping cams though. Different Valves, ports, the works.

Not a bad idea really. It would give it more pre compression and definitely improve the spark density atomisation at lower RPM...

Yep, copy that, just one step at a time for Jarred

I was at Pedders the other day and they had a Corvair up on the hoist. They're infamous for being one of the very few motors that rotates counter clockwise.

They were a popular engine conversion for beetles (being an aircooled flat 6) and you could buy a cam to make them rotate the other way. (or you could just flip the diff.)

            Crazy fan belt setup too.

I've heard of flipping Diff's before but it doesn't make sense. Is there enough room in the casing to do so?

Then you have 4 or 5 reverse gears & one forward gear

              • No. Because the engine rotates the opposite way, so does the gear box. By turning the diff over you reverse the direction of the tyres, so it turns the tyres the right way.

Yep there's room (not sure about all the boxes of course) and there's a few scenarios.
                  • To install a backwards rotating Corvair motor in a beetle.
                  • To remove the reduction boxes in a splitty or a country buggy.
                  • To run a box back to front and upside down in an open wheeler.
                  • or just to surprise the crap out of Golf Man
