Wicked, Thanks for clearing those things up for me, totally understand. You learn something new every day

It can be super annoying to pick up something half way when it's been done half assed. I think I'll try do a little more research and double check things to make sure.

I still fear this setup will never be reliable.

Jake's Performance - Blow through turbo specialist

Give that guy a bell or email.

I called him a long time ago, looking to do a set up similar to what you have. He went through it all with me, what i'd need etc etc.

He's meant to be a specialist in blow through carb set ups.

Where you want to set up the intake is common with MX5's. Cold, high pressure air there when moving.

However if I get pulled up that will be the least of my worries haha.

That's it for a couple days. Hope everyone has a good Christmas.
Thats the best place to put your cold air induction on a mk1! its not structual and yes if you get pulled over they will pick on it! because its the gold coast! Not that ive ever been pulled over in any of my mk1s because they don't know what it is, Id suggest to find a stock looking air box from the wreckers you don't want a run a open pod filter that just attracts attention under the hood mount it in such a way it looks factory and they'll be none the wiser. just an idea

As for the turbo setup with the weber i don't understand why you are running high pressure Vl turbo fuel pump and a rising rate fuel regulator with a weber they are ment to run at low pressure??? you should be using a high rate low pressure holly fuel pump and your fuel pressure for a weber should be about 3.5psi (from memory??).

fuel pressure has to increase with boost levels, even on carby applications. Carbs have to be specially modified to accept the extra fuel pressure (I hope your weber already has)

I don't know but a turbo is probably going to also attract some attention isn't it? I say whack a pod in the front drivers side behind the grille!

Hi Scotty, Brilliant job, keep posting the pics.
For the firewall, i reckon you can use a stainless firewall penetration kit that is specified for use on racetrack cars...depends if you need to go bigger than 1" or 25.4mm in diameter.. you can get these delivered fedex the states quite cheaply... Link for something similar to what might want to consider using is: Tubing/Sleeving from Aircraft Spruce or http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...ration_kit.php

keep up the great work, lovin watching it come together.

pretty sure the carb has to be set up for boost, otherwise the needle and seat will blow out, also gaskets and what not due to uneven pressure inside and out carby.

Draw through setups seem a little easier but cant use a intercooler, and not many turbos use fuel safe seals.

The persistent rain is coming into my work area so there's not a whole lot going on today.

Thanks for the feedback on the air box. I've seen how good the mk1 look without the rain tray also. If I could make up my mind what I want to do with it I'd be happy haha. Routing the filter towards the headlight is an option but I'd prefer to minimize the piping.

The area cut would be 2 1/4 inch. Thanks for the link 5VW. A nice alternative.

Jarred is right on the fuel pressure. I would need to maintain 3-5 PSI above boost levels. The carb has been modified to suit a blow through setup, I just think it hasn't been done very well. The choice of webber wasn't a very good one either. It's only single butterfly and has no fuel return line. Both necessities for a good blow through setup from what I have read.

The turbo might attract some attention but the conversion is all mod-plated. I won't be running a BOV either.

Thanks for the link to Jakes performance Jarred. However....from now on I'm going to refer to my blow through setup in past tense. I have extended on my EFI mind map and have now convinced myself to do away with the current setup and inject it. Some people may have preferred me to keep it carby (anybody lol?) so I'm sorry to those if they planned on seeing that through. Please keep the "why bother" or "just change the engine" comments away or I'll send you anthrax in the mail...I kid I kid.

I'm going to build a Megasqurit 2 ECU using a wideband O2 for easier tuning. I'm still not 100% on the method I'll be using ie, TBI or sequential/bank port injection etc. I'll sit down one night this week work out my course of action. Ease of adapting a plenum/fuel rail etc will be the deciding factors.

The downside is it'll add a few weeks to the overall build.

A pod will atract more attention what ever you do put it in a box, even get one made with a panel filter its the gold coast mate its pretty bad for defects. The rain tray is a high pressue zone best place for cold air induction i would run the same on my car but its been completly cut out now

I think it's a wise move to go EFI.

Mega squirt looks like a bit of fun, and perfect for a DIY'er.

IMO what you need to do is find a later model VW manifold (as long as it's 8V and mk 1, 2 or 3) which has a fuel rail (and injectors) in the manifold itself. You should then be able to bolt that on and use that for the injectors and fuel rails. I'll have a look at my mk 2 tomorrow (if i remember) and tell you if the manifold may be suitable.

I think a TBI setup is basically a glorified carby setup, and wouldn't have as significant gain/improvements as 4 injectors would. Just my 2 bob.

Thanks Jarred, That would be a big help if you remember. Something that's already compatible out the box will make life very easy. I totally agree with TBI. Multi-port will definitely be my first choice.

The police are always out and about. This car will be clean compared to what I usually drive. While some confrontations can't be avoided I usually find not driving like a **** helps a lot haha.

                          Small update for today.

I took the windscreen out. The seal was in really good condition so I wanted to try save it if possible. Came out pretty easy, The plastic insert had a crack through it before I started so that came out in 3 pieces instead of 2.

I Finally got a close up look at how bad my dash really is. I'll take it out soon and have a look at my options. Not to concerned with the interior right at this moment.

Found this gear knob in the garage while trying to find my timing light. Thought why not

I got onto the drivers side guard today also. This one only took me about an hour to get off haha. There is a medium sized rust hole (top left) that I'll need to repair. I had seen it before and thankfully it's not as bad as first thought. I also cut out the bracket that held some sort of breather box tucked right up in the arch. I have no intention of putting this back in.

                          Santa was good.

                            ratcheting ring spanners are golden!

That 'breather box' is part of the emission system. notorious for collecting crap and causing rust.

A little off topic but here is a couple links to pictures of my last build.

My last project was an R32 Nissan Skyline.

I turned this crumpled standard beer can here:

Into this R32.4 Wide body which I used to daily drive most places. Was also my drift car.

I did sell that though now I just drive a W201 Merc which really isn't anything special, I lowered it and threw on some BBS RS wheels with a AMG copy Kit. The car was originally 2 tone Red/Maroon which I got rid of:

Also worth mentioning were my S15 Silvia and a rad little turbo ET pulsar. They were a few years back so all those pics are archived somewhere sorry.
