You can buy a re-enforcing plate but most people just weld it up. Very common on Mk1's.

Bit hard to find these days. GSF used to sell them.

There's usually a few on UK ebay.

I used a big washer, same as the ones used to reinforce the floor where the seat belts bolt up. The bigger the washer the better to transmit the load to as large an area as possible.

Yeah if you have a look in my 16v thread, my mate made a really big plate and reinforced that whole area. If you can pick up a plate like Pete suggested, that's the easiest though.

Me and my 34 month old boy on the otherside of melbourne in dwindling light, I figured it was time to get some epic bush mechanic on..

with only a blade screwdriver and a hacksaw blade I managed to make a retaining plate out of the centre console dial blank, with much difficulty i jammed on my contraption and drove home to west footscray 13 odd km's of inner city suburbs later..
Is there some kind of regular fix for this? I have heard of it happening but unsure of the remedy. Make a larger washer?

                excuse the picture quality..

hahahahaha i love it! this exact same thing happened to me just on friday!!! i called the nrma and the bloke gave me a washer that did the job till my appointment with Al (Alex G) that night.

only difference mine pulled through the retaining plate that some bush mechanic had whacked on there, so we just cleaned it up rewelded and painted and good as new.

EDIT: I remember hearing as well that this was a factory recall on all mk1s it was that common, you would take it back and they would install that reinforcing plate.

                                wow!!

this is what I was exactly looking for.. as mine all cracked and the clutch cable came inside and no pressure on clutch cable..

so i had to make L shape plate and screwed on to firewall....

Now I can get this and weld it on !

                                thank you
