    According to the original handbook it's 40L, that would match what I'm getting into just right

    If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        45L is the capacity, according to the manuals.

        whether it actually is that or not who knows.

        i can only ever get 25 litres into mine, damn, should clean out those breather hoses.....

          That sound's all too much like a diesel tank. Foaming problem's. Had them too.

          Ahhhhh, the memory's standing there for 15+ mins to fill a full tank.

          The tank should be 40 litres plus what ever in the filler neck.

          My GTI handbook say's 40 litres(9 gallons)

          Very early Golf's had 45 litre tanks.

              I don't honestly know.

              Maybe they didn't measure it properly for the first couple of years

                  I think the tanks were 40 litres + 5 litres reserve. As far as I know all the tanks were the same size.

                      1978 Golf Owner's manual states;

                      Fuel tank 9 galls (40 including 5 reserve)

                      Haynes (1974-1982) lists;

                      early models 45 litres
                      late models 40 litres
                      What's early?

                      Bentley (1975-1977) lists;

                      45 litres
