  • Coilover legality

As can be seen by my questions in this forum, I'm working on a roadworthy for my Mk1.

One of the things that needs fixing is a leaking front strut. My question is can I replace this with my Racelands that I have already bought to get the car approved?

The racelands are TUV approved but I'm not sure wether that has any Influence.

The roadworthy is being done by a local mechanic, not a vicroads place..

From what I understand from talking to an engineer, ADR's require you to maintain 2/3 rds of the original suspension travel and have a clearance of no less than 100mm from the ground, no engineering required. (Anything that falls outside of these limits would be illegal and could not be engineered if you tried).

So that covers ride height... as for approvals on the coils themselves, there is a whole other question. Never asked, but I assume that TUV means squat in Australia.

Bottom line, I don't believe there is anything wrong with coils so long as they meet the above requirements and have any required Australian approvals.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

My understanding of coilovers in Victroia is: They are fine as long as no part of the car sits lower than 100mm.

yeah they are +20 to -120mm I think so they dont have to lower the car at all.

sounds good, thanks for the help guys.

          +1.

I've got Racelands too (same as hottunings), and even with them maxed out for height it was well below the standard height.
If you raise them right out the helper spring will just compress and the shock will max out and give no travel at all!
If you removed the helper spring you might get more/some travel with the car raised up.

That's just my experience though. My car's probably 110-120mm to the lowest part of the car now (the sump), for RWC purposes.
PM me if you want to know where i adjusted the collars to on the shafts for comfortable ride and legal height, as it's much easier to do without them installed!

I've heard of people passing roadworthies with coilovers, and heard of people not passing.

Put it at a proper height, and hope for the best!

As Jarred said put it at the stock height with the coilovers and you should be ok.

If you look at it this way you can buy any number of aftermarket shocks and springs for any car so coilovers are no different really. If it is a direct bolt on item and is within standard specs (eg height) no mechanic in the world will knock it back for a roadworthy i wouldn't worry.
