Cut Springs

ive ran cut springs in my golf when i first got it (previous owner did it) and it looked good.
But without the extra spring rate i bottomed out everywhere, tyre scrub over small bumps ect... and cornering sucked,

Then went to Boge turbo shocks and SPAX 2" lowered springs and it was great.
Now im running koni shocks allround with unknown springs and its too soft for me, but wife and kid prefer it

cool yeah I really want a nice set of Koni's or something.... don't want cheap stuff.. but for the time being I wouldn't mind getting it lower and firmer if possible, cheaply.... because atm, it's totally hideous ride height and handling.. just after opinions, wanted to know if people had experience with them, etc atm, I'm swinging more towards just waiting it out and putting up with it how it is.... lol

used to cut springs all the time back in the day...its a cheap way to get low (i can remember people running about 2 coils!!!...yes, just on the bump stops!)

Wise move waiting.
If a spring falls out of its seat and you lose control and smash into someone, main problem is, even with 3rd party they'll can your insurance and you'll be massively out of pocket and probably have trouble getting more insurance in the longer term. If it was as simple as cutting a couple of coils out and dropping the car so it looked good it would be great - but unfortunately this is not the case...

man. so many people do it. i've done it. not in a mk1. there's wicked debates on every forum about it. dont expect a handling performance improvmet, you'll feel the bumps more and that's about it... but if it's height that is ur enemy go for it.

stopping a spring from de-seating when extended is not that hard to do with a bit of creativity.

yeah, height setup at the moment is ridiculous!
the body roll is awful... and the handling.. I don't think it could get any worse, lol.

what a bunch of SNOBS! cut them man, i'm gonna do it once i'm past roadworthy just until i get coilies in december

basically, if your springs aren't LOOSE when the car is jacked up, then its fine especially if you're not racing about.. but on that hand.. you do have a 1.8L which has more beef then standard.. i dunno, i guess if you drove sensibly then it will be fine.

I bet half the people nocking cut springs have done it before....... haha its funny cause its true

Yeh as mentioned it won't improve the handling as your not improving your springs. Maybe lookout for some old king springs to cut at least they are better steel than stock, on that note call king springs directly they can usually make springs to suit if you give them the drop your after. well they did a few years ago when I used to deal with them

thats right, there is no way it will make the car handle or ride better, it is just for looks.
if you are really skint then do it, otherwise save a few bucks and just by some lowered springs then save up for some good shocks.

but if you want to be low and cheap...cut them dude

if you got shorter shocks to help keep them captive, then they are semi safe

but if you have wider wheels, expect scrub over most bumps,

Just do it man. The car is a box anyway so why not! The bull**** about springs falling out and the car bursting in to flames and killing school children and puppies is rubish! Ive seen cars drop springs and driven cars when they droped springs. It kindo goes *twang* or *dum* and its like you hit a bump and then the car is even more slaped = bumpy as shiz but looks sweet. Its not even close to some of the bump steer ive had with coilover and Its nothing worse then geting a flat tyre.
Handling isnt realy improved, it probly worse but your not doing it for handling, its looks and reduce body role. You can stop the spring falling out if you cut it in line with the last stock coil and if you find some way to cable tie one end to the cup.

You can get JOM coilovers for $550 off ebay, while you wait just cut the damn things!
The only thing i can realy say is, take the springs out with proper spring compressors or you could do SERIOUS injury to yourself. Also re-set and compressed springs are just as bad as cut springs, and king springs are about the same.
