Mk1 doesnt need power to be fun IMO..

        Even a Stock 1.8L is good, 2L 8v is even better ...

And both are reasonable price Swap

**** power. Once i've got the coin I'm going to brace the **** out of my MK1 and get some Adrenaline's or KU36's to chuck it into corners hard as hell.
Not going to worry about having good stopping power, because not braking for corners is great fun.

240 NA at the wheels would be a 1.5k rev band hill climb engine turning 11k revs tbh, pointless when theyre doing the same power+ with 1.6 16v's with 3k bands

I have friends with over bored steel bottom ends and 8.5k limits with pack D+ head specs struggling to crack 180 whp and others running bored G60's with a wishlist spec who are only just getting to lower middle 200's with the charger on.

potential for 240na would be a revtastic square set-up that would need very frequent rebuilds like any other mega revving engine.

A good usable set-up for an 8v daily would be a bored bottom end with rods pistons k'e crank and big valves with port work and some itb's or big carbs.Would get you decent power and torque and pull you the hell about in a mk1.Going for a bored 2.0 bottom end like TSR and C&R did(2.1donington iirc and 2.2 zerstorer)which were prone to heavy oil use due to slap and while tractable engines are way old technology now. Ive seen far more 16v's go 200 NA than G60 and possibly the best mk1 set ups I seen actually go were Nick Wilsons mk1 16v(2056cc/45's)or Graham Vanstones NA 20v on itb's both running over 200 nearly ten years ago

                Love this thread

The BEST fun i've ever had in a car was my little Polo 1.4. Not much power, but good suspension set up and a bit better stoppage and BAM - it's a fun machine...
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

id agree with that too,I ran a polo 1.3 digi multi point in my mk1 for a while with a four branch ported head and cam,was probably only about 80bhp but was a revvy little fun box and with the car all stripped out would still go some, pulled it out for a kr and its never ran right to compare what double should be like lol

Graham Vanstones ex mk1 is bonkers!!!! (well, it was when it was running)

Josh, I dont argue with everyone, i just call BS when i see it.

I have been on the VW scene for many years in the UK, I have seen people try and fail to get 8v pumping out big figures. Even 16v's struggle to break the 200 bhp mark (tho 180-190 is hit very often and will run all day long)
The time and effort put into NA engines to break 200 bhp on a multi valve head is massive (and costly), yet again thats why I say BS to 8v figures like this.

If i look a fool it doesnt bother me, atleast i know what I know what I am talking about
