did some digging.. some people just protect it with tech wax or if you really want this is a clear designed for metal.. Might dull the finish a tiny bit though..

ahah yeah i know what you mean, it's not a process i would be keen on doing again!

however in saying that, theres nothing like the satisfaction of a good diy job!

hoping to paint and clear the centres this weekend!

        • so a bit of an update here, nothing too exciting! i have polished 3 of the 4 lips and finished restoring the centres (sanded, primed, painted and cleared). i have also organised the bolts so just need to finished off the final lip and then sort out tyres.

waiting for my girlfriend's old man to set up his milling machine so i can get rid of the gutter rush as well, it isn't major but i may as well.

(the the rim in the bottom right hand corner has not been polished yet)

also, did some digging around to try and find torque setting for these wheels, couldn't really find anything so i thought i'd go with 18 foot pounds which is about average for a 2-piece bbs wheel? any thoughts on this? also, for future reference, where is a good place to source the wheel bolts (the bolts which bolt the centre to the lip) cheers.

            • hey guys, not much progress here, just got back from europe. no rush in finishing the wheels, however i want to have them done by GAF in September.

can anybody tell me where i can source a new brake booster hose? the hose seemed to have perished in my time away which means i can't drive it at the moment! - sucks.

              any help appreciated.

              • The one from the booster you can buy vac line or get a silicon one from mk1 autohaus.

Post a pic of which shape it is as I might have one here.

hey mick, unless i can't find it, the one on mk1 autohaus is not correct...the one i need is in the photo below...can you make it out from that pic? (has two right angle bends in it)

if you happen to have this one lying about that would be awesome!

                  cheers.

                  • As long as you can connect the one-way valve in between, any vacuum hose will do, mate. Just go to Auto1 or similar and ask for something about the same shape. They'll have something you can use, even if you need to trim it for length etc.

                    • There's a neater way.

Some brands of cars have the one way valve in the barbed fitting into the booster itself.

I found a few just wandering around the wreckers.

Once you've changed that over you can use a straight piece of vacuum hose to your manifold.

Bit hard to see here but it's the round white thin on the booster.

                      • so run into a bit of trouble with the mk1...unfortunately it looks as though the oil pump has failed very suddenly on me causing the engine to stop...had no signs of this happening and it litterally just stopped dead outside my house.

i will be checking the the extent of the damage on the weekend. i think the first step will be to check the head/cam - see if the engine rotates with the cam removed, if that's damanged then onto the bottom end, will take bearing caps off and check the crank etc...fingers crossed it's just the head at this stage! real shame because the engine was running so well and i was about to go to the drags tomorrow night to see how it went incomparison to my old 1.8...the joys!

hopefully it's just the head because i have a sth african head which is already ported and decked ready to go...if not then the worst case will be having to purchase a 16v and put the delortto's on ahah but will wait and see.

Ouch! Time to rip the head off and check the extent of the damage. If you need to borrow the head bolt tool let me know.

cheers arno! pretty confused at this point! everything looks ok and the bottom end rotates now without the head on! I'm no expert so I'm not sure how to check is a valve is broken/damaged? I mean just looking at them they seem ok, but is there something specifically I should be checking? hoping I haven't pulled the head off only to find it is some sort of timing issue...advice appreciated!
