  • The Mk1 Golf... How in the world did I fit that in there?

Haha, I thought I'd start a thread for people to tell their stories about fitting large and unthinkable things in their Mk1s.

I'll start by saying the other day my Dad 'n' I managed to fit:

    - 1 double bass
    - 1 cello
    - Drum equiptment
    - Large toolbox
    - 2 grown males
    - 2 bags of clothes
    - a chair
    - a music stand
    and......
    - a small esky

All of this in my dads little Golf Mk1 GLD.

I used to play in a band in the mid-late nineties and all three of us had mk1 golfs, we used to call them tardises, our record for one car was a whole drumkit, a full PA system with stands, a guitar amp, three guitars in cases and other assorted bags, leads and bit & pieces.

A BMX across the back seat, 2 grown males and bags of clothes for each. That's about the maximum i ever crammed into mine.

                Mollins and I once did:

Aftermarket front swaybar setup, all 4 doors from a 4 door mk1, large toolbox, mk1 rear hatch, set of fixed quarter glass and 2 big blokes (the both of us) in his old mk1 4 door.

I have carried many and much in my various mk1's, too much to remember really.

my motto is "If it cant fit in the golf, I shouldn't have it".

only problem is that you can fit so darned much in 1

Fitting a hatch in seems like a feat in itself.

A hatch does fit, so does a mk1 bonnet

You want to brag about low ride height? Fitted a fridge in my GLS once.

                            .
I guess I should have tried hard when I move house recently. May have saved a few trips. Probably only a few heavy boxes you could/should fit in the back.

About a year ago, I helped a friend move his stuff out of his old office. The boot was full and I could feel the difference in acceleration and braking as well as the slight sag in the back.

My friend once got 7 people and a dog in his L Bug. That would have been fun.

My dad and I (again) got two mountain bikes on the roof, and filled up the back with fishing rods and baggage a few years ago for a camping holiday.
