    • You know when you drive a MK1......

After 15 years.....you have a MK6 GTI, you still cannot sell the MK1.

It makes no sense to keep it, but just looking at it is enough.

Current ride - MKVI GTI, Candy White, 4 door, Detroits, DSG, BT
Previous VW - MK 1 Golf Clipper Convertible - 1993 - gone and now called Linda
Previous VW - MK 1 Golf GTI 1983, Lhasa Green, Perrielli P's, euro front look, gone but not forgotten

you know you have just bought a Mk1 when...

windscreen wipers dont work and it rains on way home
When the brakes decide not to work at all,
when every gear change you flatten it again and cloud of smoke is behind you....
You realise its petrol and not diesel, and giggle even more at the smoke
when you can get away with doing 80 in a 100 zone, then you get stared down when over taken... you proceed to grin and wave

        Ahhh good fun today was

and the instuments don't work because the contacts in the ignition switch have worn out (but the car will start and run OK).

          • Speaking of wipers..

I turned mine on the other day and they went up.. But the driver's side didn't come down. Haha.

Gave it a nip up with a 10mm socket and all sweet.

                  • You know you OWN a mk1 when everyone you have ever had spends more time "broken, or waiting for parts" then you do driving it.

                    • when you hate your 20 year old Mazda MX6 because everything works and it never breaks down. Give me a car I can "tinker with" and know every nut and bolt and on speaking terms with all the electrical connections, even when it's buried at the back of the dashboard.

You know you drive a MK1 when every day of the week you're sick of it; then on a freakish 20˚C sunny winters day, you go for a country fang on your favorite twistie roads at 80-150km/h with the vent windows open smashing cold air on your (edit: fully clothed) junk and fall back in love with it.
