Much safer handler than the Mini's, and Renault 12 I used to have - good spins there! Best effort was putting a Mini Delux off the road east of Bridport (Tas) with 4 scuba cylinders tucked behind the seats...

I'd say that it may not be the hankook tyres that are the problem, but the weight distribution of the hatchback and surface conditions.

This is a pretty common FWD thing to happen, the engine anchors and becomes the pivot point.

I'd suggest advance driver training!

I've had both Hankook tyres and the Conti Premium Contact on my car. The level of road holding, especially in the wet, was so different that I wouldn't be surprised if it was a factor.

By the way, the Conti Premium Contacts have now done over 80,000kms and look like they still have about 80% tread. Didn't expect anything like this, but I suppose the Mk1 is very light on its tyres. So my point is that its worth spending money on good tyres - the extra expense is negligible over the life of a set of tyres.

thats fine, but you should realise this occurance was not something that is new to me.... im fully aware of the dynamics of the car, having owned and driven it for 5 years now (just that car) and over that same piece of road in the same conditions.... it was both my assessment of the situation and the imbalance with the tyres, nothing more.

and just FYI, this arvo, in the wet, whilst i was going very slowly (45km/h) around a corner, the rear again began to let go. i will be lettig some of the air out of the rears to make them a bit more grippy as i think they may be too hard for the back at 35psi.

justification of which is that when i've had 4 of the same tyre on the car, the handling is quite neutral, tending to understeer when left to own devices and able to oversteer given the right persuasion..... these tyres seem to tend only to oversteer at least in the wet.... never again will i get 2 great tyres and 2 crappy ones.
