    Dramas Ive had

Got the five speed into my GLD. Problems I have encountered are, one linkage has to be lengthened to get the throw for fifth, yet to be solved. The clutch kit Matt supplied had a throwout bearing in it and for the life of me I couldn't make it fit anywhere in the assembly so I figured it would remain the same as the old system with the shaft contacting the pressure plate disc directly. The Clutch adjustment is manual and I had too much slack straight away, and I was very worried that I had blown it not putting in the throwout bearing. It seems the throwout bearings are for the V6. I packed the clutch cable up with a spacer and the clutch seems to work OK. My CV's are the 90mm and I need 100mm so am going to attempt to fit the bigger CV onto my shafts. The fun continues, can anyone tell me where on the box the ID code is, I have found the 020 marking.

The throw out bearing goes inside the gearbox at the other end of the actuation rod. You have to pull the green cap off the pointy end of the gearbox to change it.

Take a look at the brokevw site. Detail on where the codes are can be found here. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page.

        Gold Thankyou for that!

Just revealed my holdenness/fordness on the throwout bearing. Im learning. Sorry to Hijack the thread. So .71 ratio is going to give the tallest fifth gear?

        Thanks

i ran an CHD/CHE box in my mk1 gld for a while, same box as comes on the AAZ mk3. its the longest stock box with a 3.69R&P and 0.79 5th (could make it longer by swapping in the 0.71... maybe i'll do that in the mk3 ).

in the mk1 it was a good box and provided nice cruise rpm of 2500rpm at 100kph, 2000rpm at 80 and 2800 at 110, etc etc.

how was the CHD/CHE/CHB box around town though. did the longer legs make for a noticable slower acceleration, etc?

realistically, most of my driving is city stuff.

i didnt notice any difference in the first 4 gears over the old diesel 4 speed that box is now in my LS, and with the 1800 and big carb, i can do 100 in 2nd (although the speedo's probably a little out)

                Hello hiho

                cheers

                  Chb

CHB apparently has .85 ratio fifth gear 3.67 final drive

                  CHB17025

                  14 7

If i get around to it I will have to put in a .71 fifth when the 1.9 goes in. Got the joss from Matt on the CV's I am going to have to machine the collar back a little. I couldn't see the code for the CHB in the chart posted earlier, thinking the box is an 05 model, to late for the chart

check the techtonics link. CHB is listed there. a couple up from the VW motorsport ratio listings.

I dont think a CHB would be worth it, with out a 5th gear swap, since factory it has a .85 5th, which means it'll be spinning harder than a 4T, FF, CHD. For me, it's out of those three boxes atm.

                      Its in the car

not much I can do about it now, but anything beats the four speed, once I am on top of the trivia I will build a custom box with the taller fifth gear
