I realise the starter motor is different and on the other side of the motor, i just want to know if i can use the solenoid.

Thanks for the link mate, it looks like they are not interchangable. Anyone got one lying around?

You need to fit the heatshield to protect the solenoid from the exhaust heat.

What is hapenning is when the car is hot the solder is melting on the solenoid and the car wont start. When it cools down and the solder reforms, its good to go again.

Changing the solenoid wont help, you need the heatshield.

Otherwise the car looks good mate.

Yeah thats what i thought. That seems to be a problem that a few people have. As far as i can see the heatshield is there, around the downpipe? Ill have a better look on the weekend.

                Cheers man.

Had the same problem with my starter, not engaging when hot.
The heat shield was fitted to the starter. The heat shield fitted to the downpipe was also intact.
On examination of the solenoid piston, found a radial groove which indicated jamming at the lip of the solenoid cylinder.
To rectify this I just polished the groove in the piston with red scotch brite and de-burred the lip of the cylinder with a fine file.
I also extended the heat shield (fitted to starter) to protect more of the solenoid from the heat of the down pipe.

Since then the starter has worked perfectly.(9 months)

carby has a slow throttle release, so it stick then slowly goes back down to idle so it doesnt stall .

Took the starter off and cleaned up the solenoid, it seemed ok but i polished it up inside and re-greased it anyway. The heat shield had been straped down tight on to the started with a big hose clamp on the gearbox end. I figure thats the main cause of the heat issue. I havn't had a chance to test, im just too tired after work and working on the car, but im hopefull itll be ok. If not, ill work something out.

Thanks to some of that mysterious mk1 magic where things brake and then fix themselves the wipers now work as they should.

Its going in tomorrow morrning for a roadworthy check, wish me luck.
