Golf N's were 1.1 litre from memory!
GLS were German built and all the Aussie assembled Golfs were LS models built in the old VW factory at Clayton in Vic. 1976 only. Nissan took over the place in 76 as well so it wasnt unusual to see the 2 brands being assembled in the same sections, the Dulux paint colours were shared between the 2 makes as well.
I think HRT and HSV are in the old factory these days, correct me if I am wrong
I'm pretty sure the best way to find out for sure (if you're really unsure with the badges) is like Andrew mentioned, all the aussie ones have dulux paint codes I believe.

you are indeed correct. The GLS and GLD were fully imported from about late '76 to early '77. My personal family experience was when my parents order for a Martini Olive Kombi Microbus was being stuffed about in 1976, as Sandersons of Camberwell wanted to try and stitch them for a fully-imported model (about $8k vs $6k) after selling them and telling them their new 'bus would only be 2 weeks away.................................9 weeks later their fully assembled Australian 'bus was 'found sitting in a yard'...don't trust VW stealers...............
Children(VW) who have left home, among others:1966 VW 1300 Deluxe Bug(Harbour Blue)1966 VW 1300 Steel Sunroof Bug(Ruby Red), 1971 VW 1600 S Bug(White) 1972 VW 25th Ann. Bug(Avocado) 2000 VW Golf Mk IV GTI 3 door(Metallic Black Magic), 1985 VW Golf Mk 1 GLS Cabriolet (Metallic Gun Metal) Current: 1985 Mercedes Benz 280CE Coupe(Midnight Blue)
I've noticed some funny quirks between them as well, considering they are completely identical except for the colour and are built a month apart. The main one is the vent holes that are behind the front grill. For some reason my blue car only has one of them like they forgot to cut one out, while the other has both cutout.
