So has anyone heard of a '77 Golf Convertible?
When I google"vw golf convertible history"it's indicated they were first built in '79.
I had a look at a convertible today that was complianced as built 5/77.
Obviously someone here will know the facts.
It was fitted with a 1.6 carbie/4 speed man.
Body was r/s unfortunately. The rest was all there if a bit worn.

I may have mentioned this before, but when I first got my golf I kept seeing a white convertible MK1 with the reg only one number different from mine (original '76 plates). So people have taken to them with a can opener before. In an old thread someone said that they are even worse than chop-top Beetles, so stay clear. Chop-tops/convertibles are different from factory Cabriolets. They were later than regular MK1s.

          I guess so.
It was suffering terminal cancer so I didn't waste too much time checking it out.

the proper cabby's have thicker sills amongst other things to help cope with the lack of rigidity provided by the roof. that's why they're 300 odd KGs heavier.

This "convertible" did have thick sills.
It had what looked like a square hollow section beam beneath where the normal sill is.
The beams did look bodgie as there was a seem weld running along the length of the beam as if someone had welded 2 C channels together to form the square shaped beam.Didn't look Factory Standard to say the least.
