  • New CV's/driveshafts-availability

    Hi again everyone,
I need to get new driveshafts and was wondering if anyone knows where to get them.
I had some suspension work done today and on inspection, found the Lhs outer CV is stuffed.
Tech. reckons that was making the rumble noise on acceleration as mentioned in a previous post.
A driveshaft business I spoke to says the CV's are unavailable but they will rebuild mine.
I can't see that working as they can't re-harden the worn contact areas in the housing, just fit new balls (wouldn't we all love that).
I'd like to renew all the CV's and would prefer exchange driveshafts ready to fit coz that's how I roll-
    don't think,just spend.
    Any advice ?
    Ta. Andy.

You can call Tooley Imports in Hornsby - they are pretty easy to deal with and have heaps of new MK1 stuff available.

I have in the past bought a large amount in for a few users from the US but you need to pick these parts carefully as the heavy items will catch you out on freight.

could get some SH driveshafts off someone (wrecker maybe) and then get new CV's and whack em on.

You can buy them brand new, I wouldn't bother getting them re-conditioned.

maybe if you have a few bits and pieces to buy, it'd be worth getting an order from GAP. Last time I checked the dollar was pretty strong against the green back.

Shop over 10,000 VW & Audi parts in stock for same-day shipment. Use our extensive online catalog to find the OEM and Genuine parts you need fast.

Have you ordered from them before?
I've never payed by credit card over the internet,is it safe?
"enter card details" is usually where I lose my nerve.

You're right about the prices and the exchange rate,
both sides driveshafts fitted with all CV's,boots etc.,all brand new Empi brand for $225 + postage.
          Good deal

Can't wait to see what the postage will be.

GAP are great. I've probably spent about $10,000 with them over the last 5 years or so. I've never lost a parcel or had the wrong parts delivered.

Just e-mail them with any concerns or questions regarding postage, they're really happy to help.

If you're ordering heavy stuff like driveshafts, be prepared for fairly hefty air mail charges. Also consider topping up the order with all the little bits and pieces like gaskets and shift linkage kits, door handle gaskets etc.

I don't understand why you need to replace the driveshafts - please explain.
You only mention that the CV joints are worn - I would expect CV joints to be readily available.

Have you spoken with a VW specialist? Boris at VolksCare in Bayswater has been helpful.

It's pretty safe. Just make sure the site is secure - the URL should start with https instead of the usual http. But it's dangerous in the sense that you might start ordering all kinds of stuff from the comfort of your computer.

I had a worn CV joint on my Mk1. I bought a S/hand drive shaft from the wreckers [$25 IIRC] on the understanding that if the CV joint was worn it would come back. I dismantled, cleaned & inspected & it was fine. New boot & grease & it's all good. Easy to see once it's dismantled if it's worn.
Never buy o/seas until you get a quote for postage or freight.
Germanauto parts want US$31 to post a couple of glowplug relays to me, whereas the 4 glow plugs I bought from another ebay store only cost US $7.80.
I wouldn't use my credit card details over the internet unless it is Pay-Pal. I would fax all your details.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

I too was a bit concerned when you said you wanted new driveshafts as well. Unless they're somehow damaged, I'd imagine only the CV's would need doing.

I only mentioned the new driveshafts so you can do the direct replacement thing. It might be cheaper to get a SH DS from a wrecker and new CV's (from either OS or Local source) and then do that. It's all up to you, but there are plenty of options.

Like Pete mentioned too, if you do buy from GAP, it's worth while to get a whole bunch of other little bits and pieces while you're there.

Gave Boris a call this morning.Very helpful bloke,he said a while ago he was onto some old stock parts which included some CV joints,he's making inquiries.
My inquiries so far all point to unavailability of new CV joints.

I want to change all CV's because the car's done 210 k,if one is worn the others aren't far behind.
Change-over driveshafts with new CV's fitted negates the need to confirm if your orig. shafts are straight and saves time.
If I could get a new CV to replace the worn one I can clock the shaft at work and this would get me out of trouble for now,but when the next one fails I'll be kicking myself.

Thanks for all your advice guys

Owning, driving and working on these cars is fun.

                      Finding parts however,......not so jolly.

                          CV joints

If it was me, I'd souce some second hand driveshafts/CVs, theres plenty around, and rebuilt them. Its a dirty job, but unless they have run without grease for a fair while, will be OK. I did it a couple of times to my swallowtail shafts when the boots have split and they have 450k on them.

                              New CV's

Let your fingers do the walking in the Yellow pages in Melbourne. I replace the CV's every year on the rally car(Mk1) with reconditioned ones for about $150. I have never had one fail and never had any problem with drive shafts.
