      Yeah, bet it goes
Actually, May '76 reg is quite handy - the ADR27A 'clean air' regs came in around June 76, so you can legally do whatever you want will the engine pretty much (as some previous owner has clearly done )
Otherwise, its a case of finding a tame mechanic...

Always thought that the timing of the MkI Golf release was a bit sad from that point of view...

I'm not to sure of the cars past, but yes, the car has an rally exaust on it and it does sound evil, it is a mustard yellow with black flared arches and black bonnet scoop. what is DOVW? I know the last owner took the car on a VW cruise.

Unfortunatly the the supercharger is off the car at the moment as the last guy mount was an inch out to the left and it threw belts. And as i just bought it, i wanted to see the condition of the engine - pistons, rings, valves...etc. And i am pleased to say it's in good knick, and he didn't slap a supercharger on it without hardening the internals. Now i have to re-ajust the arm and she's ready to go. pictures soon, as soon as i can get them onto the computer (flash drive is broken and cant find cable from camera).

More likely to be this one

                  70-100 hp 1.6
configuration 1595 cm³ (97 in³) inline 4, bore 81 × stroke 77.4 mm, 1.05 ratio head SOHC 2-valve per cylinder block grey cast iron, five bearings output 51,5 kW (70 hp) at 5200 rpm, 125 N•m (92 ft·lbf) at 2800 rpm 74 kW (100 hp) at 5800 rpm, 140Nm(103ft·lbf) at 4500 rpm fuel ecotronic carburettor, KE-Jetronic aspiration cast aluminum intake manifold, cast iron exhaust manifold application

FN and FP are the original 1.6 engines supplied with the early golfs in australia. The GTI is different and was designed for fuel injection.Where is the water outlet on the front of your head? between 1 and 2 spark plugs, or between 3 and 4 plugs?

I think that isn't because of the ecotronic carby, but i'm not sure. my car is before the epa laws came in. is there any way i can find out what the FP engine is?

The real early ones (about pre June '76 for NSW) had more power than the later ones. It is very hard to find the specs on these as they are Australia only engines. From memory I think there was a 5 hp difference.
