I think it started with the - and + of the reverse lights wires.
they were lose and might of touched it other until it started a fire. the sparks might of touched the rubber the was around the wires and started from there.
anyway,
mika...any updates?
umm gordo, mika said the carb back fired, and that caused the fire... not any reverse switch wiring...

Nah it was purely a fuel related fire as Jarred said.
No updates at the moment. Been busy with work, my other car's engine prep and job interviews the last few weeks and, today was spent pulling a 1UZ out of a mate's Soarer...now I know why I like old cars - they're simple! I've pencilled in next Saturday to get to work on the golf. Might even try my luck tomorrow if the weather is decent and not blowing a gale!
Still haven't had much chance to work on the golf, but today I got something done for a little motivation to get the car ready before i start my new job next month
Monday or tuesday they'll go on, then go back into storage for roadworthy haha
Well, I went to put them on and 3 were flat. Had the valves replcaed on two wheels (damn Simmons valves) for free by my local Tyrepower, but they couldn't find the leak on the last wheel. I got it home and put it in a tub and it's leaking from in between the shells, so looks like i have to disassemble and reseal them
Haha, I actually put the rears on as I hadn't found the leak in the 3rd yet, drove to the tyre place to pick up the other 2 and it was flat already! Got a photo on my phone of the rear, needs some spacer action (or I could reverse the wheels! hahaha)and ~2" drop in the rear and ~3" in the front
VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

If you go 2" lower in the rear, you'll have to clearance the arch (maybe both of them) I thinks. Should look really tuff once they're all on!
Thanks Guy I bought them off thought they were +30 but wasn't 100% sure.Being simmons, there isn't any offset stamp on them. +30 looks about right without getting the meauring tape and calclator out.
Lowering will be a while off at the moment. Undecided on coilovers or just a set of super low springs, if they make them...and I STILL have to sort out the roadworthy!
What clutch should I be getting for this car? It has an 020 5-speed in it, mated to a standard 1.6. I've given the car some curry and the clutch slips like a cartoon character on a banana peel! I have no idea what car the 5 speed came from, so I'm not really sure where to start.
