Yeah not sure what a mk1 is gonna be able to tow around! I actually like the twin lamp setup on the front, it's a little different.

For wheels, I'm on the lookout for something semi-aggressive. I have a set of 4x100 15" steelies in the garage, but they are meant to be track rims for the other car if they fit over the brakes.

Low...well I might get to that some day. I have a set of chopped kings in the boot, but I don't think i'll use them. Then again, the car is pretty ghetto, so it'd keep the theme going and I'm curious to see how low they sit!

One thing i really want/need to do is upgrade the brakes. Had my heart in my mouth today when i needed to make some emergency braking in the wet. My 1600kg ute pulls up better!

      You'd be surprised.

A 1.6 manual Mk1 is rated at 400kg unbraked and 1000kg braked trailer load.
      Ball coupling downforce 50kg.

FYI the roof rack is good for 75kg.

      (Source 1975 Golf Instruction Manual)

I think though you'll find it's illegal in most states to tow a trailer that's heavier than the tow vehicle. The good Hayman Reese tow bars are rated at 750kg.

I've towed up to about 600kg with mine, but by the sounds of it my brakes are in better shape than yours. (The 1800 helps too)

Towing a 6'x4' trailer about the place shouldn't be an issue.

Ah...they're your old suspension bits? I just ended up reading your entire thread. Now I'm panicking about the roadworthy! haha

Looks like the front needs to be "reset" by my mate Mr. Ryobi!

Nah not my thread, my mates. back sat nice, front was a little high.

but sure, nothing an oxy can't fix, or if you want some standard ones, just holler.

Got some standard springs already, Jarred, but thanks for the offer

Did the front suspension today and god damn, the old shocks were absolutely stuffed. Both were leaking and had no rebound whatsoever. Also started making a shopping list for roadworthy items...got a few things to buy and working out what to do about some questionable bodywork and rust.

Headlights also stopped working today...only parkers work now, so hopefully it's something minor that has gone wrong!

Anyone able to help me with what exactly the "shifter box" is and what i need to grind back?

Tried my pulsar's wheels on the golf....they look a little big in real life though! haha

                those wheels look pretty sharp.

Start simple with the headlights. bulbs, fuses, earths etc.

They won't be going on the golf I don't think. I've got some 15" Simmons B45's for it in 15x7 which should look alright

Just ordered myself a poly bushing kit off ebay, as i'm pretty sure the rear engine mount is fudged as it knocks on back off, so I may as well do the lot. Also got some steering rack boots, as the current ones are about to disintegrate, and ordered a new thermostat and cam cover gasket.

Hopefully I can sort out the mechanicals over the next week, then I can look at the electrical gremlins and rust issues...

Whilst i remember, can anyone tell me what the 1st switch on the dash board above the centre console is for (next to rear demist and hazards)? It has two switch settings other than "Off' and looks like it has a picture of a noodle bowl with 3 chopsticks in it (lol probably a light related switch). When i switch it on, I can't see anything happening anywhere...not even bowl of noodles being dispensed!

Factory fog lamp switch, wire it up for spotties thru the hi beam and relays..
                      Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

                      Cheers,

Thanks mate...figured as much, just didn't understand why the switch light lit up but the spotties did nada.

More electrical stuff for me to do!

Spent a couple of hours today replacing the rear suspension. Also test fitted the new wheels onto the back while I was there

Also decided to see if I could see what was under all that sheepskin on the seats. Previous owner told me the sheepskin was stitched on, and it is in spots, but surprisingly, the seat fabric is looking very clean! The foam looks a little tired though.

Also, found some kind of mystery bit dangling from between the spare wheel well and the fuel tank...anyone know what it is for?

Your mystery bit is a fuel tank breather. Because your car was a diesel they could vent the tank to atmosphere.

In the petrol models that would be hooked up to the charcoal canister.

Wealth of information! Thanks again Would probably explain why I have a ~30L tank as opposed to 40-45 as I've read petrol Mk1's are meant to have
