progress report, found a few roof racks for the flying flea this morning, steel tube one and a small black aluminium one. I'm liking the steel tube one at the moment as its a good size to strap the boards to. will probably do something with the black one further down the track like adding some wooden slats to it. also picked up an intake gasket while i was out so hopefully my carb and manifold are at the Post office tomorrow and they can go on.

Ian- will do mate also have a black 4 so i keep a keen eye out for them, where are you based?
Mike- yeah it seems like they were all fairly universal racks, god knows what these ones were off but stoked i found a set!

been giving the mk1 a bit of love this week as i've had the week off, replaced the fuel lines and filter in the engine bay, fitted new plugs + leads and gave her an oil change, my passat manifold and weber carb arrived yesterday so ive been like a kid at christmas playing about with that getting it all together. i think everythings in its place now after a few trial drives getting the accelerater to back off correctly and setting it all up.

loving the difference, it breathes alot more freely than the old solex did, nice little power boost too. Just have to figure out some connection to hook up the water choke. heres a few snaps of the engine bay just to make sure its all correct, if theres something looking not quite right in there give me a holla. (and yes i know my throttle mount leaves alot to be desired) will make something better up when i get a chance.

Next job will be getting onto the brakes as theyre pretty non existent, think it might have something to do with the servo as the revs dont seem to change at all when cars running and the pedals pushed in? heres some shots anyway

          and after:

coils and wheels are taking their time, fingers crossed by next week they should be in too

nothing bad jumps out immediatly when looking at the pics.

the throttle linkage looks similar to what I had on my old set up. doesn't really matter if it's unconventional, or looks bad, as long as it works, and is safe, imo.

should be able to run it with out a choke, I did, and only had troubles starting on really cold winter mornings (sub 5 degrees kinda thing). That filter looks pretty dirty too, might be good to get a new one in there

I'd get rid of the carbon canister in the rain tray on the right there, it's just a rust trap and I'd loose all the 'emisson' gear too.

nice little set up you got there.

i had the same thing on my mk1.

had a wonderful sound and really liked revs.

              good luck with the rest.

cheers dude, been good fun doing it!
I took your advice Jarred and done away with all the emmision cr*d, put it all in the box with the carb etc so i can still revert to stock if need be.
so much more room in there without it all.

had a muck around with the roof racks this eve.

and an arse even j-lo would envy.

been told coils were posted yesterday so hopefully about a week from the uk. until then Ill just enjoy speedbumps

Bought from the uk man from the hottuning store, for the amount it saved though i would never do it again. Pm evorobin he does good prices and is a good bloke. what i should have done from the start really, would be on the car by now. my payment cleared two mondays back and after about a thousand unreplied emails they tell me it was found and posted yesterday, bunch of wallys.

                          end of rant and rave.

                              question time

hopefully someone can help me out. what is the second line coming from the right of the fuel line under the bonnet, shown in this flick. Mines been crimped and lefthanging in the engine bay, i take it its just a breather for the tank? should this be connected to something or is it fine as it is.
                              cheers in advance
                              Dan

line just to the right of fuel running parallel
