Hi mate, POR15 is a anti rust product as opposed to a bog, I think I may be telling you the wrong product though as I don't think you paint over it...

Heres some info from the website anyway:

    What is POR-15?

POR-15 is the product that changed car restoration permanently and is used by manufacturers world-wide to protect their factories from rust and corrosion. POR-15's non-porous coating keeps moisture away from metal permanently. The secret lies in POR-15's curing process. Most paints dry through evaporation, but POR-15 dries faster when moisture is present.
Now add to that POR-15's incredible hardness, toughness, and flexibility and you have a coating that is practically indestructible.
POR-15 is great for auto restoration, but it's also a state-of-the-art concrete preservative and floor coating.
Try the many uses of POR-15 and you'll understand why this incredible product is now sold in 52 countries around the world!

I've got a similar issue in the gutters of my golf that I need to attend to ASAP. So keep us updated.

What did you use for the initial rubbing back?

yeah it's not a nice site.
so far i have taken back the rust with some mildly course (spelling maybe wrong) sandpaper in a thing wood block, a flat-b file for the worse bits. I'm borrowing a small version angle-grinder in the next few days and will make a proper start on the ridding the rust.
personally i would get onto any roof tray rust (or any other for that matter) asap because in this case it has cause the tray to crack all the way along the outta seem and has rusted in there too.. it's really tricky to get to also.

Can take some pics of the repair process if anyone is keen?

Yes, pics would be good, thanks.

I think mine has been bogged up too at some point, but i've had the car for 4 years and the rust has appeared gradually (curse not having a garage!!!). I'm hoping it's not to bad underneath but I guess that's rarely the case with rust

Just checked mine - it's mostly on the underside of the gutter, quietly rusting away out of site

Doesn't look too bad though, but needs doing before winter (assuming it actually rains). I have pics but here may not be the best place for them? (Don't wanna highjack anymore than I already have).

              Cheers

nah that's fine, put em up, will get a rust fixing thread going.
yeah that's the worst thing having no garage, i have one but it's full of crap.
so i went and invested in a tarp for the moment until buying a car cover or cleaning out the garage. It's been raining in hobart for the last 2 days on and off, sucks if any work wants to be done...

Had a bit of a prod and poke with a key and it didn't look too extensive.
I don't even have a driveway so any work has to be done at my parents' house.

so that's the underside of the roof gutter?
that first one looks pretty nasty, better get onto it asap.

the sun is out again so it's time to get to work.
i'll post some pics bit later on

Yep, just behind the driver's door. I knew there were some issues in the upper side of the gutter, but the 1st 2 pics I only just noticed today.

                        damn thats sucks.
it'll take u some time unfortunately.
right, so didn't get round to taking any pictures, but have now nearly removed all the rust from the passenger roof gutter.
does anyone know of any places that i can buy the yellow (believe it's called wattle) paint either online or in Hobart?
also can anyone recommend a bog they have used in the past?
I really want to get this rust sorted asap.

Yeah, not so good . But they aren't as big in real life as they are in the pics. I'll take to it with some sandpaper and rust killer on the weekend and see...

you shouldn't really have to use much bog, there shouldn't be a ding or anything that needs filling.

Maybe a can of spray putty or filler primer [the same thing really] in a spray can would be the go to get it smooth. You sand it smooth after you spray it on. Autobahn, supercheap will have this

There should be a couple of auto paint shops in hobart, don't know anywhere specific though. If all else fails, many autobahn's will be able to mix up a spray can for ya. only problem is if they mix it to the exact colour code, the colour will be much brighter than your paint on the car due to ageing [i know this for a fact, my old mk 1 was wattle yellow, and I repsrayed that to the code and the colours were really different] A good paint shop should be able to mix something based on teh orig code that would be closer to the current aged colour.

hope that all helps, and makes sense..

Well I had a go at the rust today. Good news is it doesn't seem too extensive. The bad news is that it's in a really awkward position and I ended up taking off some paint where I didn't need to I put some of that acid rust killer on it and hope it will do some good. Back to it tomorrow and some other rust spots.
