Was the MK1 Golf Caddy (pickup) ever sold in Australia as an official model?

Would it be possible to import late model builds from South Africa? Anybody ever look into this?

It wasnt sold here i dont think no.
Ud have to own/drive it overseas for 12 months before importing any car that was built after 1988. Youre free to bring in one built before then.
The only other exception is if its part of the SEVS scheme but then someone would have to have a workshop that is approved to comply them. I dont think that is the case for the caddy at the moment and i cant see anyone investing the money required to make that the case.

      Never brought here officially.

There's currently about a half dozen odd in the country apparently.

you could do what Andrew did and get one from the US and convert it to RHD, or buy one from the UK RHD but chances are with rust/rot. You'd still have to import one, unless you can find one for sale here.

as long as they are Pre-88 then yes, I spose so. I would be very cautious buying from SA, unless you had trusted friends of family there. I've heard of a few stories from SA friends, and I personally would be more comfortable buying from the UK or US.

I'm having family over there check on pre 1989 models. Brother in law is spray painter and can source a good one and fix it up for me prior to shipment.

I'd be wary of non-trusted suppliers as well.

I had a customer in here the other week who travels to SA regularly and he said he would look into how muchy trouble it is to bring them over.
He didnt really raise his eyebrows when he saw mine sitting in here, rather just stated that he had seen hundreds over there 2 weeks prior while he was over there.
They are getting very hard to source in the USa as the Mexicans are buying them all up. I was lucky to get mine and in such a straight condition.
They are a very rare thing over here, just wish I had more time to spend to complete my conversion. The rego sounds very straight forward after talking to a transport fella here. Mine is an 82 model.

They were in production until 2006 with a short break between 1982 and 1986.

There are many available, (thousands were built) problem is that most are post 1989 which makes selecting suitable ones more difficult.

Pity that production stopped in 2006 as low volume new imports may otherwise have been possible without having the need for a RAWS workshop. Post 1989 will require compliancing it seems. Need to find a workshop willing to do that then late models with 1.4i, 1.6i and 1.6 & 1.8 carbs would be available.

Anybody know what it will cost a RAWS workshop to get approval on a model like this?

                  For instance cost price of a 2003 1.6i is about R50 000 = $7100 + compliancing & shipping. Is $10000-$15000 too much to ask for a 2003 Caddy?

how much would compliancing cost & how difficult would it be? could be quite tough if they aren't built to good enough specs.

From shipping a car from the UK to getting it reg'd on the road here would cost [estimate] about 7-8K AUD. I'm pretty sure that was the figure that regularily was getting thrown around in all the old threads about importing cars [which there are heaps of, have a search ]
