  • lowering spring combination

    I have a question.

    Currently the car has koni adjustables and Eibach springs, however the look on the 14" rims is a little high.

    I am going to put the car on to 15" rims and then would like to get the car even with the top of the tyres/guards.

    Whats the go with a standard sort of spring for that drop (unsure of the distance lower from stock that I need) - i have read through and seen king springs etc - can someone offer me some advice?

    Here is a pic from when I bought it so you have an idea how high it is now.



    I am not really interested in spending much $ at all on this mod - so creative options are welcome.

        I think the only way you are going to get it that low is to angle grind the springs but that will create a less than desirable ride.

          You can have your existing springs reset. Go to your local spring works/good suspension place! Someone who does 4x4/truck/industrial springs and tell them how much u want it lowering for the front and how much u want it lowered in the rear. Cheap and it legal Doesnt affect the stiffness ot softness of the spring dramaticly

                I recall Ben R. (owned a Mk1, Tas) retrofitted some sort of 'sleeve' to the top of the strut mounting point, effectively lowering the ride height. However I am unsure of the exact details. Maybe Andrew knows more? The grass option appears the most logical.*

                    I welded another strut tower onto the top of the oringinals thus lowering the Golfs by 30m/m. With that setup you could retain the stock suspension travel.

                      Weld a couple of plates to the bottom rear shockie mount and drill new holes at the ride height you want. This gives you the ride height exactly where you want it and you can change back to original height just by movint the lower shockie bolt back to it's original location.

                        Some great suggestions - thanks.

                        I reckon I will put the 15" wheels on and then look at one of these welded options.

                        I am not willing to shell out for coilovers for this car so if it gets too hard it stays at this height
